Early on West Brom went close as 17-year-old Jonathan Leko played in Craig Gardner but his effort was cleared off the line and moments later Garnder had a curling shot superbly saved by Adrian.

West Ham threatened occasionally and Andy Carroll headed over, while Gardner again had a chance but got his header all wrong as he put it wide.

The Hammers came back into the game and in the 34th minute they took the lead.

A tackle in midfield saw the ball ricochet to Payet out wide and his cross found Kouyate who headed the ball back where it came from and into the far corner. 1-0.

Before half time Kouyate turned from scorer to creator as he surged into the box and set up Noble. West Ham’s captain had a loose first touch but his second saw him prod the ball into the far corner. 2-0 right on half time.
