September Shortstop Rankings

Dansby Swanson

Dansby Swanson

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Here are some final-month rankings. Please try not to get too bent out of shape if your star player isn’t listed where you like ... anything can happen in a month. Heck, there was a month this year in which Owen Miller compiled a 1.166 OPS and Madison Bumgarner had a 1.17 ERA.

As always, players are ranked by position and then combined into an overall top 300 list.

  • The Orioles haven’t dropped any recent clues about whether Gunnar Henderson will get a promotion, but it still seems like they’re setting him up for one. Formerly strictly a shortstop and third baseman, he’s played second base six times and first base three times in his last 11 games for Triple-A Norfolk. If he’s comfortable at second, having him replace Rougned Odor would seem to be a significant upgrade for the Orioles. They could also play Henderson at third and Ramón Urías at second if they prefer. It seems like time to make the move. If the callup comes, I’d bump Henderson from 30th to somewhere around 22nd on this list.

  • The Padres haven’t given Eguy Romero a single start in five games since calling him up, so it doesn’t look like he’ll be a fantasy factor the rest of the way. Romero had 21 homers and 20 steals while batting .293/.374/.520 in Triple-A this year, which would seem to make him rather interesting if given an opportunity.
