Rangers signed first baseman Jose Julio Ruiz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Ruiz, a Cuban defector, received an unusual contract from the Rays last summer that gave the team the option of signing him to a four-year, $4 million deal in November or releasing him. The Rays didn’t think he was worth that kind of money after he hit just .272/.358/.348 in 92 Double-A at-bats last season, but maybe he’ll take a step forward in his second year in the U.S. He turns 26 in March, so if he doesn’t break through this year, it should be fine to write him off.
