Brian Matusz had another dismal outing Sunday, giving up six runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings in a loss to the Tigers.

He struck out five and served up a pair of home runs. The young left-hander is surely happy to see his season come to an end, as he went just 1-9 with a hideous 10.69 ERA and 2.11 WHIP. Matusz has plenty of ability, so we’re not giving up on him yet, but you’d be taking a leap of faith by spending a mid-round draft pick on him next season.

Astros recalled RHP Jason Alexander from Triple-A Sugar Land.

Alexander returns to the majors after allowing five runs over 4 1/3 innings in long relief during his lone appearance in the majors earlier this month. The 33-year-old swingman has made 16 appearances for the Astros over the past two years.

HOU 2nd Baseman #27

Astros placed 2B/OF Jose Altuve on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

As expected, Altuve hits the injured list after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 oblique strain over the weekend. The 36-year-old veteran second baseman figures to miss at least one month, which puts him out until at least mid-June.

Astros designated RHP Cody Bolton for assignment.

Bolton gets the boot from Houston’s relief mix after posting a pedestrian 5.40 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 22/14 K/BB ratio across 20 innings over eight appearances.

TB Starting Pitcher #32

Steven Matz (elbow) will be activated to start on Wednesday against the Orioles.

Matz gets the green light after making it through Monday’s bullpen session without any issues. The 34-year-old lefty has been on the shelf recovering from elbow inflammation since May 5. It’s a decent landing spot right out of the gate and Matz has been a viable streaming option in deeper mixed leagues with a 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28/13 K/BB ratio across 37 1/3 innings this season.

Robinson Ortiz

SEA Relief Pitcher #49

Mariners recalled LHP Robinson Ortiz from Triple-A Tacoma.

Ortiz earns his first promotion to the big leagues after posting a spectacular 1.69 ERA and 18/12 K/BB ratio across 16 innings for Triple-A Tacoma this season. The 26-year-old was acquired in a trade with the Dodgers last November. He’ll operate in middle relief for Seattle.

Patrick Wisdom

SEA 3rd Baseman #16

Mariners activated INF Patrick Wisdom from the 10-day injured list.

Wisdom returns to Seattle’s bench for Monday’s series opener against the White Sox after missing one month recovering from a left oblique strain. The 34-year-old slugging corner infielder is a bit of a one-trick pony as an all-or-nothing power hitter at this stage of his career.

Mariners optioned INF Leo Rivas to Triple-A Tacoma.

Top prospect Colt Emerson isn’t going anywhere, even when Brendan Donovan is back from the injured list. Rivas offers some appeal in a bench role, but the Mariners are trying to make a real playoff push this summer and there simply isn’t a spot for him anymore. There’s always a chance injuries bring him back to the big leagues in a bench role later this summer.

Mariners optioned RHP Domingo González to Triple-A Tacoma.

González reeled off 5 2/3 scoreless frames over four appearances for the Mariners after being called up back on May 11. The 26-year-old righty should rejoin Seattle’s bullpen at some point in a couple weeks.

Brennen Davis

SEA Center Fielder #94

Mariners selected the contract of OF Brennen Davis from Triple-A Tacoma.

Davis had an upward mobility clause in his minor league contract with the Mariners, which is why he’s been added to the club’s 40-man roster. He’ll remain stationed at Triple-A Tacoma for now, but figures to receive the call to the majors at some point later this season. The 26-year-old former top prospect has been outstanding this season, slashing .281/.394/.548 with eight homers in 165 plate appearances over 38 games on the doorstep of the big leagues.
