Padres signed LHP Luke Westphal to a minor league contract.
The 34-year-old hurler pitched in the Padres’ system from 2021-2022 and has been pitching in foreign and independent leagues since. He had been toeing the slab for the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League where he registered a 3.32 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 50/12 K/BB ratio over 38 innings in his eight starts. With all of the injuries that the Padres have had to shoulder in their rotation, adding another arm for organizational depth seems prudent.

Mets designated C Ben Rortvedt for assignment
The Mets claimed Rortvedt off waivers from the Dodgers in February, but he did not make the team as the backup catcher. If he goes unclaimed, he could choose to stay in the organization in the minors.
Lodolo's injury shakes up Reds' fantasy SP options
With Nick Lodolo yet again lost to an early-season injury, James Schiano evaluates what fantasy managers can expect from the Cincinnati Reds' rotation, where Chase Burns will be relied upon to "steady the ship."
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #40
Reds placed LHP Nick Lodolo on the 15-day injured list with a finger blister.
Lodolo resumed throwing Tuesday after leaving his start Sunday in the first inning, and the hope is that he’ll be able to keep his arm built up while his finger heels, allowing to return to the rotation as soon as his 15 days are up.
  • CIN Relief Pitcher #46
Reds placed LHP Caleb Ferguson on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain.
Ferguson was slated for a followup MRI today, and if that turns out as hoped, he’ll be allowed to start a throwing program. He’ll be a part of the Reds bullpen once healthy.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #74
Reds recalled RHP Jose Franco from Triple-A Louisville.
The 25-year-old Franco was an early cut for the Reds, getting the boot on March 7, but now he’s up to make his major league debut, most likely anyway. He’ll be available in middle relief in case anything goes wrong for the Reds this weekend. Beyond that, the Reds would prefer that he start games for Triple-A Louisville.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #24
Rays placed RHP Steven Wilson on the 60-day injured list with lumbar disc inflammation.
We knew Wilson wasn’t going to be ready for Opening Day, but now it seems that he might not be ready until June.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #63
Rays placed RHP Edwin Uceta on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement.
Uceta has been sidelined all spring, but he has already been throwing bullpen sessions and could get into games in Triple-A soon. When he returns, it might not be long before he works his way into the closer committee with Griffin Jax and Garrett Clearvinger.
  • CLE Right Fielder #7
Guardians placed OF George Valera on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain.
Valera had been the favorite to win the left or right field job in Cleveland, but his injury seems to have opened the door for Angel Martinez to get first crack at that. There is currently no clear timeline for Valera’s return.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #91
Guardians placed RHP Andrew Walters on the 15-day injured list as he recovers from right lat surgery.
Walters had surgery back in the beginning of June. The fact that he’s not on the 60-day IL makes it seem like the Guardians feel confident enough that he might be back before June.
  • CLE Right Fielder #30
Guardians designated OF Johnathan Rodríguez for assignment.
The Guardians needed a spot on the 40-man roster for Rhys Hoskins, so Rodríguez was waived to make room. The 26-year-old has plus power but struggles to make enough contact to make use of that.
  • BAL Shortstop #27
Orioles optioned INF José Barrero to Triple-A Norfolk.
Barrero has some positional versatility which could be intriguing during the season, but he didn’t provide much value with his bat in spring training.
