29-year-old hurler Winans had a path to potentially crack the club’s Opening Day roster after the injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil, but he struggled to a 5.02 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 14 1/3 innings in Grapefruit League action. He’ll open the season in the rotation at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and should get an opportunity to pitch for the Yankees at some point during the 2025 season.

With Jose Caballero set to return from the injured list on Friday, someone needed to get the boot from the Yankees’ active roster to make room. Jones has struggled to make consistent contact during his brief time with the Yankees, striking out 12 times in just 27 plate appearances while hitting .167 (4-for-24). He’ll return to an everyday role at the Triple-A level until another opportunity arises with the Bombers.

The Yankees needed to free up a spot on their active roster for the return of Gerrit Cole on Friday and it appears as though Cruz was the low man on the totem pole this time. The 26-year-old hurler pitched very well in his two outings for the Yankees, posting a 0.43 WHIP and a 3/0 K/BB ratio over 2 1/3 innings of shutout baseball. It shouldn’t be long before he earned another opportunity with the big league club.

Springer tagged right-hander Camilo Doval for a 359-foot (96.0 mph EV) solo shot in the seventh inning, providing the Jays with a valuable insurance run. Springer also walked in the contest, finishing the night 1-for-4. The 36-year-old has experienced a major dropoff from his outstanding 2025 campaign, slashing a woeful .200/.278/.342 with four homers, 10 RBI and two stolen bases through his first 134 plate appearances on the year.

The 27-year-old slugger worked Carlos Rodon for a one-out walk in the opening inning then proceeded to steal second base. He then raced around to score the game’s first run on an RBI double off the bat of Daulton Varsho. For the season, Guerrero is now slashing .283/.374/.372 with just three homers, 22 RBI and four stolen bases through his first 211 plate appearances.

With Louis Varland unavailable after pitching in the previous two games, Hoffman slid back into the ninth inning role and performed flawlessly. He got Cody Bellinger on a line drive to first base and then punched out Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Paul Goldschmidt in succession to end it. It’s going to take an injury or a series of implosions from Varland for Hoffman to reclaim his closer’s gig, but it was nice to see him have success in the role once again on Thursday.

The 25-year-old right-hander struck out six batters on the night while scattering just two hits and one walk. The only real threat against him came in the sixth inning as the Yankees put two men on with one out, but Miles rebounded to strike out Jazz Chisholm Jr. and then got Paul Goldschmidt to ground out to quell the rally. Miles generated nine swings and misses on 63 pitches on the night, posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. He now boasts a 2.17 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 29/8 K/BB ratio across 29 innings on the season. Look for him to function in a bulk role again next week on Tuesday against the Marlins where he’ll make for a strong streaming option in deeper mixed leagues.

The dynamic 25-year-old outfielder led off the fifth inning with a single off of Spencer Miles and swiped second base as Anthony Volpe struck out. The Yankees couldn’t cash him in from there though. He has struggled at the plate to begin his big league career, hitting .167 (4-for-24) with two RBI and a 12/3 K/BB ratio through his first 27 plate appearances.
