Chris Martin (elbow) underwent an MRI on Wednesday that didn’t reveal any structural damage.
Martin will attempt to play catch prior to Wednesday’s showdown against the Rockies and remains on the club’s lineup card. He’s obviously unavailable to pitch for at least a couple days, but it sounds like there’s a realistic chance he avoids a trip to the injured list. With Luke Jackson (hand) also hurt, it’ll likely be some combination of Robert Garcia, Jacob Webb or Shawn Armstrong getting the call in a save situation for the next few days.

Edward Cabrera gave up three homers and eight earned runs in his return from the injured list on Friday.
Yikes. Cabrera’s velocity was well up from where it was all season and he managed a 31 percent whiff rate, but he allowed eight hard-hit balls, including four off his difference-making change-up. His ERA is now 4.99. Cabrera doesn’t exactly look trustworthy for the moment, and either way you probably have some pause about risking Coors Field with him next week, but nothing under the hood looks dramatically rough.

James Schiano discusses the improvement that Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has made on offense in recent weeks, including the .455 batting average and 1.409 OPS he has posted in his last five games.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #38
Robbie Ray went five shutout innings against the Cubs on Friday, walking five but allowing only two hits in a win.
Ray needed 97 pitches to get through five due to his command struggles -- he only had nine called strikes all game -- but luckily the Giants poured on enough runs that the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt when he was removed. Ray figures to be usable against the Nationals next week, though they have been feistier than preseason expectations might have had you believe.
  • AZ 1st Baseman #6
Ildemaro Vargas (thigh, neck, ribs) was held out of the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup on Friday.
Vargas feels like he got run over by a truck after a nasty collision with Max Muncy at first base during Thursday’s game, but fortunately all tests came back negative for any serious injuries. He’ll get a day or two off to heal, but it sounds like the 34-year-old infielder will be able to avoid a trip to the injured list.
  • MIN Left Fielder #9
Trevor Larnach is absent from the Twins’ starting lineup for Friday evening’s tilt against the Royals.
It’s a rare day off for Larnach with an opposing right-hander on the hill. Ryan Kreidler will start in his place in left field and will bat eighth for the Twins against Royals’ right-hander Michael Wacha on Friday night in Minneapolis.
  • KC 3rd Baseman #11
Maikel Garcia (hamstring) is not in the Royals’ starting lineup for Friday’s battle against the Twins.
It’s the sixth straight game that Garcia has missed due to his hamstring strain, though he did appear as a pinch hitter during the ninth inning of Friday’s contest. The expectation remains that he’ll be able to return to the lineup at some point over the weekend. Nick Loftin is once again starting in his place at the hot corner on Friday night.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #58
Astros’ manager Joe Espada told reporters on Friday that it’s possible Hunter Brown (elbow) could rejoin the team’s rotation next week.
Brown threw 57 pitches in his third minor league rehab start at Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday and came out of that outing feeling good. Espada said that they’ll meet to discuss the next steps for the 27-year-old right-hander, but it sounds like there’s a good chance he could make his long-awaited return to the club’s rotation next week.
  • CLE Left Fielder #1
Angel Martinez is not in the Guardians’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Rangers.
It appears to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 24-year-old outfielder. Daniel Schneemann will start in his place in center field and will bat sixth for the Guardians against Rangers’ right-hander Kumar Rocker.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #48
Brewers recalled RHP Craig Yoho from Triple-A Nashville.
He’ll replace Jake Woodford in the team’s bullpen. Yoho, 26, has been outstanding in 16 appearances at the Triple-A level this season, posting a minuscule 1.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and a 24/5 K/BB ratio over 18 innings. He’ll give manager Pat Murphy another weapon to deploy from the right side in late game situations.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #41
Brewers designated RHP Jake Woodford for assignment.
The Brewers needed to free up a spot on their roster on Friday and unfortunately for the 29-year-old hurler, he wound up on the outside looking in. Woodford made 16 appearances during his time with the Brewers, posting a disappointing 6.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and a 20/7 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings. While good pitching depth is hard to come by, there’s a chance that he could slide through waivers unclaimed.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher
Brewers recalled LHP Brian Fitzpatrick from Triple-A Nashville.
The 26-year-old left-hander gets another opportunity to work out of the Brewers’ bullpen with DL Hall (pectoral) landing on the injured list on Friday. He has made four appearances with the big league club so far this season, registering a 1.59 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and a 4/3 K/BB ratio over 5 2/3 innings.
