NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Cooper Rush is expected to start in Week 2 against the Panthers.

Rush is taking all of the first-team reps with the Falcons in Friday’s practice, and according to Rapoport, sources familiar with the situation expect Rush to get the nod on Sunday. With Rush under center, all Falcons pass-catchers receive a substantial downgrade after he struggled to move the ball in Week 1 against the Steelers. Fantasy managers hoping Drake London and Kyle Pitts can be of some value against a Panthers defense that allowed 269 yards and two passing TDs to the Bears last week should approach both players with caution. London is best trusted as more of a WR2, while Pitts, who saw one target on 21 routes last week, shouldn’t be viewed as anything more than a boom-or-bust TE2 in what figures to be a run-heavy game for the Falcons.
Florio: Hurts controversy needs full examination
Mike Florio explains why unanswered questions remain in the Jalen Hurts controversy, including whether the NFLPA will seek a formal investigation and whether Hurts could consider legal action.

Rush’s release came after the Falcons signed Andy Dalton. Rush had a rough stretch with the Falcons, throwing for 229-1-4 in his two starts while completing 56.4 percent of his passes. Once regarded as one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league, Rush has struggled mightily in his two seasons away from the Cowboys, going 0-4 in his starts since 2024 while throwing one touchdown to eight interceptions. He could catch on elsewhere as a practice squad option in the coming days, but he seems like a long shot to start another game in 2026.

Penix was a mess in the first half, missing Drake London on what should have been an walk-in 30-yard touchdown. The Falcons abandoned the run game in the second half, facing a three touchdown deficit, and Penix threw three touchdowns in hurry-up mode. Taking five sacks on the day, Penix targeted London and Jahan Dotson heavily, connecting with Dotson on a nicely thrown 41-yard gain in the second half. This was the first multiple-TD game of Penix’s season. He’ll be a low-ceiling superflex play in Week 7 against the 49ers.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix was able to practice this week and will start for Atlanta in a potentially high scoring game against the Bears. Penix should be considered a streaming option in most formats. Falcons declared QB Cooper Rush, QB Jack Strand, CB C.J. Henderson, DB Malcolm DeWalt IV, LB Christian Harris, OL Ethan Onianwa, and DE Drake Jackson inactive against the Bears.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
It was reported the day after the Falcons’ overtime loss to the Ravens that there was “optimism” that Penix would start in Week 6. After being upgraded to a full participant on Thursday’s practice, he seemed like a lock to be ready to go by Sunday, so Friday’s news isn’t all that unexpected. Penix has thrown for 719 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception this season, throwing one touchdown in each of his first three games. He’ll be on the fantasy radar in 2QB/Superflex leagues against a Bears defense that has allowed just two top-12 fantasy finishes to opposing QBs this season.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
This is great news for the Falcons’ offense, which can barely function with Tua Tagovailoa at the helm. Penix is firmly on track to play in Week 6 against the Bears, as long as he gets through the week setback-free. Penix can be viewed as a high-end QB2 with four teams on bye.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
“We’ll see how he’s feeling,” head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Wednesday morning, adding that Penix should be able to play through the injury. Even if it’s a limited practice session for Penix, it’s good news for his Week 6 availability following his Sunday night rib injury against the Ravens. Penix, operating under center at a much higher rate than last season, is among the most efficient quarterbacks in the league through Week 5. If Penix is out, Tua Tagovailoa would represent a major downgrade for all Atlanta pass catchers.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix said after Sunday’s loss that he didn’t believe his injury would be long-term. He was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa in overtime because of his injury, but he also added that he likely would have gone back on the field had the Falcons received the ball to start the extra quarter. Instead, Penix said his pain worsened the longer he sat, which was why he ultimately didn’t go back in. Penix’s status will be one to monitor throughout the week. If he can’t start in Week 6, Tagovailoa would be in line to start his first game of the season.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix will undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the severity of his injury, but it doesn’t sound like he’s at risk of missing much time. Penix exited in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Ravens and was forced to stay on the sideline in overtime to watch Tua Tagovailoa throw the game-losing interception shortly after the Ravens scored the go-ahead touchdown. Penix threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and has been solid in his three games since returning from injury. If he’s not able to start in Week 6, Tagovailoa would presumably draw the start at home against the Bears.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix took the full brunt of a brutal hit to the midsection late in the fourth quarter of Week 5 against the Ravens. He would leave for one play due to the medical timeout, return for one play, and then retreat to the sideline. Tua Tagovailoa came on in relief in overtime, with the team designating Penix questionable to return with an injury to his ribs. Penix completed 19-of-32 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown prior to departing, adding eight yards on two carries. Fantasy managers will want to monitor his practice status in the coming days ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Bears.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix wasn’t asked to do much with his arm as the Falcons tied a franchise record with five rushing scores, but the threat of consistent and reliable passing has done wonders for a Falcons offense that looked lost through two games behind poor quarterback play. It also doesn’t hurt when your All Pro running back goes for a 59-yard touchdown on his first touch of the game. The Falcons were never threatened by an underperforming Saints team after jumping out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter. Penix has yet to be called on for increased passing volume through two starts, something that could change, pending the health of Lamar Jackson, in Week 5 when they host the Ravens. Penix remains a middling QB2 and does not warrant starting in all formats outside of two-quarterback leagues.

Cowboys ruled out KaVontae Turpin (ribs) for Week 7 against the Eagles.

Turpin’s absence will be felt most on special teams, with the team now forced to find a replacement on punt and kick returns. Otherwise, there is almost zero fantasy impact as the team’s WR4.

Falcons activated A.J. Terrell (groin) from injured reserve.

The Falcons have been attackable on the perimeter while playing most of the season without Terrell. Fellow cornerback C.J. Henderson is listed questionable for Week 7, but the reintegration of Terrell provides a much more difficult matchup for the injury-riddled 49ers.

Broncos activated Jonah Coleman (ankle) from injured reserve.

Coleman missed the minimum four games as he tended to an ankle injury suffered in Week 2. He led the team in snaps in that contest and could return to the primary rushing role considering the inefficient play of J.K. Dobbins in his absence, making him worthy of a start in fantasy circles in a plus matchup against the Cardinals in his first game back.

Ravens ruled out Lamar Jackson (ankle) for Week 7 against the Bengals.

Tyler Huntley will draw the start under center for the third straight game as Jackson continues to rehab a high-ankle sprain. Jackson reportedly took most of the first-team reps at practice Friday and was close to being able to play in Week 7, with the team ultimately siding with caution for their franchise quarterback. The Ravens enter a 15-game stretch in which they play three games starting in Week 8, which could have influenced their decision to hold Jackson out one more game. Expect him back for Week 8 against the Bills. His absence greatly influences the upside of the remaining skill position players considering Declan Doyle has halved his usage of play action and completely eliminated RPO with Huntley under center.

Dallas Goedert (knee) was removed from the injury report Saturday and will play against the Cowboys in Week 7.

Goedert reportedly aggravated his previous knee injury but got back on the practice field for a full session Saturday before being removed from the injury report. He could be stepping into a massive target share with both DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks ruled out. Fantasy managers can start him as an upside TE1 in a great matchup against the Cowboys in Week 7.

Saquon Barkley (hamstring) is questionable for Week 7 against the Cowboys.

Although getting in a full practice Saturday, the Eagles head into Monday’s game against the Cowboys with Barkley listed as questionable following a two-game absence. Fantasy managers have a decision considering the Eagles play in Week 7’s final game on Monday Night Football, with no clear fall back options should he be unable to play. It would seem prudent to make alternate plans at the position.

Eagles ruled out DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) for Week 7 against the Cowboys.

The Eagles will be without their top two receivers but got good news Saturday with the removal of Dallas Goedert from the injury report. Saquon Barkley is listed as questionable and appears to be a true game-time decision. Considering the low involvement of the backfield in the pass game this season, Goedert stands to benefit the most from the absences at wide receiver. He can be started as an upside TE1 in a solid on-paper matchup against the Cowboys.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Vikings plan to activate Jordan Mason (thumb) from injured reserve.

Mason came into the season as the presumed lead back in a timeshare with Aaron Jones, the latter of whom has performed as a true workhorse in Mason’s absence. Although it could take a week or two for Mason to fully regain the lead back role, his presence significantly mutes the potential of Jones. Expect a near-even split when the Vikings take on the Colts in Week 7.

Browns activated RB Dylan Sampson (knee) from injured reserve.

Sampson was limited in practice throughout the week and listed as questionable for Week 7 against the Titans. Now that he’s officially been activated from injured reserve, he’s likely to be Cleveland’s change-of-pace back behind Quinshon Judkins this week. Sampson is worth stashing on fantasy benches, but is truly just a desperation FLEX play coming off a knee injury that’s sidelined him since Week 1.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that several teams believe the Jaguars could trade WR Brian Thomas Jr.

Appearing on ESPN Saturday morning, Fowler, citing Thomas’ zero catches over the last two weeks, said something has to give in this situation. According to several teams the NFL Insider talked to, Thomas could be traded over the next few weeks. Fowler listed the Chiefs and Steelers as potentially interested teams and was emphatic that there will be suitors for Thomas. If you have Thomas in fantasy, it’s hard to imagine his value getting worse with a change of scenery. The Jaguars would appear content to roll with Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers and Travis Hunter as their top receivers in the event of a Thomas trade.
