The English amateur, who plays out of Florida State, warmed up for this week by smashing Doc Redman 6-and-5 in the Georgia Cup, an 18-hole match play contest held annually between the British Amateur champion (Ellis) and U.S. Amateur winner (Redman). Quite what relevance it has for this week is moot however. He’s a two-time winner for the Seminoles this year and will be the third FSU golfer to compete at Augusta. He played the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale last year, pegging 77-75 on his way to a missed cut (his only pro circuit experience). Hails from Hampshire, England, as does Justin Rose. The two played practice rounds together last July and tips might be passed on again this time.

The Florida State product was a two-time winner during his time as a Seminole. He’s done and graduated now, but doesn’t plan on turning pro until after the U.S. Open. That will allow him to maintain his exemption into the big event. Ellis currently ranks 37th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings but just 87th in the Sagarin ratings. His two PGA TOUR appearances have come at the 2017 Open Championship and this year’s Masters Tournament. He missed the cut in both of them. Dynasty gamers may want to keep an eye on the youngster but there is no reason to jump the gun and prematurely invest.
