The Texans continue their search for an offensive coordinator to replace Bobby Slowik, who they fired after the season.
They will interview their own senior offensive assistant Bill Lazor on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC reports. The Texans also are scheduled to talk to Rams tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Nick Caley for the job Thursday.
Lazor, 52, has served as the offensive coordinator for the Bears, Bengals and Dolphins in a 17-year NFL coaching career.
He joined the Texans before the 2023 season to assist Slowik in building game plans.
The Texans have interviewed their own quarterbacks coach, Jerrod Johnson, Syracuse offensive coordinator and running backs coach Jeff Nixon and Bucs quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis for the job.
Rams assistant Nick Caley will interview for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job Thursday, Albert Breer of MMQB reports.
Caley is the Rams pass game coordinator and tight ends coach.
He interviewed for the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator job Monday night.
Caley joined the Rams before the 2023 season after coaching tight ends for the Patriots for six seasons. He doubled as the fullbacks coach in New England from 2017-21.
In Caley’s first season as a tight ends coach in 2017, Patriots’ star Rob Gronkowski earned his fifth career Pro Bowl invitation and was named an AP First-Team All-Pro selection. Gronkowski led all tight ends in receiving yards (1,084) and yards per reception (15.7). That same season, fullback James Develin earned his first Pro Bowl nod.
Caley has coached veteran tight end Tyler Higbee in Los Angeles.
In his first two NFL seasons in 2015-16, Caley served as an offensive coaching assistant. He spent 10 years coaching in the college ranks before that.
The Texans have interviewed Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis, Syracuse offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon and their own quarterbacks coach, Jerrod Johnson, for the job.
Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis has interviewed for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.
Lewis received several requests for offensive coordinator interviews but declined the others, per Rapoport.
Lewis and DeMeco Ryans were teammates with the 2015 Eagles.
Lewis spent time with eight teams over eight seasons in his playing career as a quarterback. Immediately after retiring as a player, Lewis began coaching.
He spent two seasons at UCLA (2018-19) as an offensive analyst under Chip Kelly before interning with the Bucs in 2020.
Lewis was the assistant wide receivers coach in Tampa Bay in 2021-22 before a promotion to quarterbacks coach in 2023.
The Texans are seeking to replace Bobby Slowik, who was fired last week, and the presence of franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud makes the job an attractive one.
The AFC’s three Pro Bowl quarterbacks are Joe Burrow, Russell Wilson and Drake Maye. Burrow was the only one of the three who was an original pick.
Wilson and Maye are replacement Pro Bowls for Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, who withdrew from the trip to Orlando.
The NFL had to go down a list of alternates to get to Wilson and Maye.
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud declined his invite, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN reports.
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix isn’t going because of a previously scheduled minor postseason cleanup procedure, Mike Klis of 9News reports. Nix played through the end of the season with a transverse process fracture in his back.
It is unknown why Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert isn’t going.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, of course, is playing in the Super Bowl.
So, Wilson now is a 10-time Pro Bowler and participating in his first since 2021, and Maye is a Pro Bowler as a rookie.
The Texans interviewed Syracuse offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon for their offensive coordinator job, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN reports.
The team is seeking to replace offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, who they fired after the season.
Syracuse had the No. 1 passing offense in the country as quarterback Kyle McCord broke the ACC single-season passing record in Nixon’s first season with the Orange. McCord threw for 4,779 passing yards to break the record held by former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Nixon called the plays for the Panthers under head coach Matt Rhule after the team fired Joe Brady as offensive coordinator in 2021, so he has limited experience calling plays in the NFL.
Nixon has coached with the Eagles (2007-10), Dolphins (2011-15), 49ers (2016), Panthers (2020-22) and Giants (2023) in his NFL career. He mainly coached the running backs as a position coach.
