Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared some negative injury updates during his Monday press conference and two players had their seasons come to an end a short time later.

Defensive end Janarius Robinson and safety Deon Bush were placed on injured reserve. Robinson fractured his foot and Bush tore his Achilles.

Robinson signed with the Chiefs this offseason after having 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 16 games for the Raiders over the last two seasons. He had a sack in the preseason opener against the Cardinals on Saturday.

Bush was injured in the game against Arizona. He appeared in 24 games for the Chiefs over the last three seasons.

The Chiefs also announced that they have signed defensive end Nate Matlack. Matlack had five sacks at Pitt last year and went undrafted in April.

When Chiefs safety Deon Bush left the team’s first preseason game with an Achilles injury, the obvious concern was that he suffered a season-ending tear of the tendon.

Confrirmation of that injury came on Monday. Head coach Andy Reid told reporters at a press conference that Bush will miss the entire 2025 campaign as a result of the injury.

Bush had 21 tackles in 23 regular season games over the last three years while spending most of his time on special teams. Bush also had three tackles and an interception in seven postseason appearances.

Reid also said that cornerback Jaylen Watson has been diagnosed with a concussion and that wide receiver Hollywood Brown remains out with an ankle injury. Tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring), defensive end Janarius Robinson (foot fracture), and offensive tackle Ethan Driskell (appendectomy) are also sidelined at the moment.

Chiefs backup safety Deon Bush was carted off the field with 1:19 remaining in the first half of Saturday’s preseason game at Arizona.

The team announced Bush will not return with an Achilles injury.

TV analyst Trent Green said Bush injured his left leg on a non-contact play as he tried to change direction on Arizona running back Emari Demercado’s 4-yard run.

Patrick Mahomes came off the sideline to kneel by Bush, who put a towel over his head before he left the field.

Bush has spent the past three seasons with the Chiefs, but after playing 16 games in 2022, he saw action on only six in 2023 and two last season.

Andy Reid announced earlier this week that Patrick Mahomes would play Saturday night. The quarterback did play, if only briefly.

It was more like an appearance.

The Chiefs recovered a Greg Dortch fumble on the opening kickoff, and with a penalty tacked on, began their first drive at the Arizona 13. Isiah Pacheco went 8 yards on first down before Mahomes threw incomplete to Tyquan Thorton. Cardinals rookie cornerback Will Johnson, though, was cited for defensive pass interference.

On the next play, Mahomes threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jason Brownlee.

Gardner Minshew replaced Mahomes on the second series.

Mahomes’ official stat line for the night was: One attempt, one completion, one yard, one touchdown, two plays.

He played six snaps in the preseason opener in 2024 and six in the first preseason game in 2023.

Kyler Murray played the entire first quarter for the Cardinals, going 7-of-8 for 96 yards and an interception. He led Arizona on a field goal drive on his second possession.

The Raiders will be in New England to face the Patriots in Week 1, but Tom Brady won’t be at the matchup between two teams he has close ties to on September 7th.

Brady will be in the broadcast booth at Northwest Stadium with Kevin Burkhardt for Fox Sports’ broadcast of the Giants and the Commanders. Sideline reporters Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi will also be at the matchup between NFC East clubs.

The same crew will also call Fox’s marquee matchup in Week 2. They will be in Kansas City for a Super Bowl rematch between the Eagles and the Chiefs.

Fox also announced that Joe Davis, Greg Olsen, and Pam Oliver will be on the call for the 49ers’ visit to Seattle in Week 1.

Kenny Albert, Jonathan Vilma, and Megan Olivi will be in Atlanta for the Buccaneers-Falcons game while Kevin Kugler, Moose Johnston, and Allison Williams will call the action for the Browns’ home game against the Bengals. Chris Myers, Mark Schlereth, and Jen Hale will be the network’s team for the Panthers’ visit to the Jaguars. Adam Amin, Mark Sanchez, and Kristina Pink will call the Titans’ road game against the Broncos.

Mike Pereira and Dean Blandino remain the Fox rules analysts for the 2025 season.
