Late Friday night, the Chargers announced that veteran offensive lineman Mekhi Becton signed a contract with the team. Details were scarce.
On Saturday morning, NFL Media reported that it’s a two-year, $20 million deal.
It’s good, not great. It’s probably better than anyone would have expected him to get this year, after four seasons with the Jets that didn’t live up to his draft pedigree as the eleventh overall selection in 2020.
The full details aren’t yet known. It could be a one-year deal with an option on the second.
Regardless, Becton did enough in 2024 to get a solid (not spectacular) contract for 2025, and maybe for 2026.
The Jets made a couple of additions in free agency late Friday night.
Former Rams wide receiver Tyler Johnson and former Texans cornerback Kris Boyd, both agreed to terms with the Jets, their agents told reporters.
Johnson played in 15 games for the Rams last year, with two starts, and had 26 catches for 291 yards and a touchdown.
Boyd played all 17 games for the Texans last season. He didn’t get on the field much on defense, appearing on just 4 percent of Houston’s special teams snaps, but he was a major contributor on special teams, playing on 77 percent of snaps. Boyd’s most memorable moment came in the Texans’ loss to the Chiefs in the playoffs, when he committed a penalty on a kickoff and then shoved Texans special teams coach Frank Ross after running off the field.
Most of the top free agents signed early. As the first week of free agency ends, one of the top unsigned players has a new home.
The Chargers have announced that former Eagles guard Mekhi Becton has signed with L.A.
The eleventh overall pick in the 2020 draft, Becton’s time with the Jets was underwhelming — largely due to injury. He signed a one-year deal with the Eagles last year, after playing out his rookie contract. (The Jets didn’t pick up his fifth-year option.)
It’s reportedly a two-year deal. No other terms have been disclosed.
Becton started his career as a tackle. The Eagles moved him to right guard in 2024, and he quickly meshed with the best offensive line in the league.
The Lions have agreed to terms with tight end Kenny Yeboah on a one-year deal, Dave Birkett of the Free Press reports.
Yeboah, 26, joins a tight ends room with Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra.
Yeboah spent the past four seasons with the Jets, appearing in 33 games with two starts. He saw action on 309 offensive snaps and 610 on special teams.
He has nine catches for 111 yards and a touchdown and 11 special teams tackles.
In 2024, Yeboah played nine games with one start and had career bests with five catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.
The Jets added running back/kick returner Kene Nwangwu to their roster in 2024 and he will be back with the team for the 2025 season.
NFL Media reports that they have agreed to terms with Nwangwu on a one-year contract. The deal is worth up to $2.5 million.
Nwangwu signed to the practice squad in September and returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown the first time he was elevated to the active roster in December. He only appeared in one other game during the regular season.
In 37 appearances for the Vikings between 2021 and 2023, Nwangwu ran 27 times for 88 yards and had three kickoff return touchdowns.
