The Jets are dealing with a pair of injuries in their quarterback room, so they’ve added another one to the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.
They announced the signing of Adrian Martinez on Wednesday. The move came shortly after head coach Aaron Glenn announced that Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields will not participate in practice.
Martinez was with the Jets this summer along with Brady Cook, who is in line to start if the other quarterbacks are unavailable. Martinez moved on to the 49ers and backed up Mac Jones while Brock Purdy was out of action. He played one snap with the 49ers.
The Jets also announced that they have signed defensive lineman Eric Watts to the active roster and placed defensive lineman Tyler Baron on injured reserve.
There will be plenty of reps for quarterback Brady Cook at Wednesday’s Jets practice.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn announced at his press conference that neither Tyrod Taylor nor Justin Fields will participate in the team’s first practice session of the week. Cook is the only other quarterback on either the active roster or the practice squad.
Glenn has not named a starter for this Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.
Taylor was knocked out of last Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins by a first-half groin injury. Fields was inactive for that game due to knee soreness, which left Cook to get his first NFL regular season action. The undrafted rookie was 14-of-30 for 163 yards and two interceptions.
Glenn said that running back Breece Hall will also miss practice with a sore knee. Isaiah Davis, Kene Nwangwu, and Khalil Herbert are the Jets’ other backs.
The person who shot Jets cornerback Kris Boyd had been at large. He no longer is.
Via Jayna Bardahl of TheAthletic.com, a person of interest connected to the shooting is in custody.
The incident happened in Manhattan on November 16. The suspect had fled on foot after pulling the trigger.
Boyd, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve in August, recently made a surprise visit to the team facility after being released from the hospital.
A seventh-round pick in 2019, the 29-year-old Boyd has also played for the Vikings, Cardinals, and Texans.
The NFL has announced eight finalists for this season’s Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.
A panel made up of former NFL players Warrick Dunn, Larry Fitzgerald, Curtis Martin, and Leonard Wheeler chose the finalists after each team nominated one player for consideration. The award goes to the player that “best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, an integrity in competition.”
Cardinals safety Budda Baker has been selected as a finalist for the third straight season. Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David, Saints linebacker Demario Davis, and Vikings right tackle Brian O’Neill are the other finalists from the NFC.
The AFC finalists are Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, Jets defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, Dolphins defensive tackle Zach Sieler, and Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy.
Current NFL players will cast their votes for one of the finalists and the winner will be announced at the NFL Honors event during Super Bowl week.
The Dolphins lost running back De’Von Achane to a rib injury in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Jets, but their rushing attack didn’t miss a beat without him.
Miami rolled up 239 rushing yards and cruised to a 34-10 win at MetLife Stadium. It is the fourth straight win for the Dolphins and they are now 6-7 heading into a Week 15 date with the Steelers.
Achane managed to run seven times for 92 yards and a score before leaving the game. Jaylen Wright picked up the baton with 24 carries for 107 yards and a score while rookie Ollie Gordon also found the end zone as the Jets couldn’t find an answer on defense all game.
The victory is the first for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in eight starts in temperatures under 46 degrees and he is now 7-0 against the Jets in his career. He threw a touchdown to Jaylen Waddle to open the scoring and then pretty much just handed the ball off for the rest of the afternoon. Former Jet Zach Wilson ran out the clock in the fourth quarter.
The Dolphins scored two touchdowns on their first eight offensive plays and then turned a Tyrod Taylor interception into a third score in the first quarter. Taylor left the game with a groin injury a short time later, which led to Brady Cook’s regular season debut and the undrafted rookie struggled to move the offense for most of the afternoon.
Cook was 14-of-30 for 163 yards and a pair of interceptions. He was picked off by cornerback Rasul Douglas in the end zone to end a promising drive late in the first half and threw another to Ethan Bonner in the end zone in the final moments of the game. Justin Fields was not active on Sunday due to knee soreness and the coming days will bring word on what the Jets plan to do at quarterback against the Jaguars next Sunday.
