Vikings add speedy former point guard

With plenty of needs in the secondary, the Vikings are giving an opportunity to a guy for whom football was a secondary sport.

The team announced Friday that cornerback Nicholas Taylor has joined the roster. As Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com explains it, Taylor attended Florida International University, but he didn’t play football.

Instead, Taylor was a point guard on the FIU basketball team. He has since played defensive back in a low-level arena league.

On Wednesday, Taylor blazed the 40-yard dash in 4.34 and 4.27 seconds at the FIU Pro Day. On Friday, the Vikings brought him to town for a private workout.

They presumably liked what they saw.

Technically, Taylor signed a reserve/futures contract, but he’s committed for three years. He’ll join the team for the offseason program and, if all goes well, he’ll potentially have a shot at making the 53-man roster in training camp.

If that happens, it would be a story worthy of Invincible for a secondary that has been anything but in recent years.
