The reports that the Rams have already decided to trade the second overall pick to whatever team will give up the most to move up and draft Robert Griffin III are viewed as bad news in Minnesota.
Jeremy Fowler of the Pioneer Press notes that the Vikings are interested in trading down but that all the interest in the Rams’ No. 2 overall pick means the Vikings’ No. 3 overall pick isn’t generating any interest.
There’s nothing the least bit surprising about that. There are two hot prospects in this year’s draft -- Andrew Luck and Griffin -- and that means the two top picks are the ones that have huge value for a potential blockbuster trade. The Colts will use their pick on Luck, and the Rams will use their pick to get a king’s ransom for a team that covets Griffin.
That leaves the Vikings at No. 3, but that’s not such a bad thing. Last year the Vikings used their first-round pick on Christian Ponder, who they hope will be their franchise quarterback for years to come, and this year the Vikings will get the best non-quarterback in the first round of the draft. There are worse positions to be in.
