2020 EAST LAKE CUP - DAY 1 RECAP

ATLANTA, (Oct. 26, 2020) – A pair of Ole Miss Rebels (Ellen Hume; Kennedy Swann) shared individual stroke play honors in the women’s division, while Patrick Welch (Oklahoma) earned low honors in the men’s division at the sixth annual East Lake Cup in Atlanta.

Hume collected three birdies on her final five holes, while Swann matched her teammate’s low round amongst the women’s division by converting for birdie on each of the par-5s on East Lake Golf Club’s back-nine. On the men’s side, Welch strung together eight birdies en route to a five-under round of 67.

“It’s really special,” said Swann. “Ellen’s an amazing person, amazing golfer, amazing teammate, so I’m really, really happy to be able to share it with her.”

“I think this will give us great momentum going into tomorrow,” added Hume. “We’re all very, very talented and it’s been super close going into this tournament and it’s nice to see all our hard work starting to pay off.”

“I’ve been close to winning a few times, and hadn’t won yet,” said Welch. “I’d been close and then I’ve kind of shot myself in the foot some days. Today I just tried to take it one shot at a time and hit the best shot I could, and whatever happened, happened.”

The East Lake Cup is being contested over three days, following the format from the final three days of the NCAA men’s and women’s golf national championships. Tuesday (tomorrow) and Wednesday, Oct. 27-28, two match-play tournaments will be hosted simultaneously for the men’s and women’s divisions, with the semifinals taking place on Tuesday and the finals and consolation matches on Wednesday.

Teams for the East Lake Cup are competing on the championship golf course at East Lake Golf Club, home of the TOUR Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs. The East Lake Cup benefits the East Lake Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping families build better lives and children reach their highest potential through its holistic approach to community revitalization incorporating mixed-income housing, cradle-to-college education and community wellness. The East Lake Cup is one of the largest contributors to the East Lake Foundation, having raised more than $1.5 million for the East Lake Foundation since the tournament’s inception in 2015. ZipRecuriter and Uber Eats are the co-presenting sponsors of the East Lake Cup, with Bridgestone Golf, Mercedes-Benz and Topgolf serving as additional sponsors.
