STAMFORD, Conn. – Oct. 8, 2025 – Three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs host Jared Goff and the first-place Detroit Lions (4-1) in the Week 6 edition of NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET with Football Night in America followed by kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., on NBC, Peacock and Universo.
The Chiefs lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 31-28, on Monday night. Mahomes threw for 318 yards and a touchdown and added 60 yards and another score on the ground. With a touchdown pass on Sunday night, Mahomes will surpass Aaron Rodgers (147 games) as the fastest player to 300 career touchdown passes, including the postseason, in NFL history. Seven-time All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce had 61 receiving yards and a touchdown on seven receptions, passing Dante Hall for the most all-purpose yards in Chiefs history.
The Lions defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 37-24, last week to maintain their lead atop the NFC North. Goff threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns; he now leads the NFL in passing touchdowns (12) and completion percentage (75.2%) and ranks second in passer rating (120.7). Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery both scored touchdowns in the same game for the 14th time, tying Dallas’ Daryl Johnston and Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith for the most such games in the Super Bowl era. Detroit’s 34.8 points per game leads the NFL in scoring offense and can become the fifth team in the Super Bowl era to record at least 34 points in five games within a single season.
Detroit and Kansas City meet for the 16th time on Sunday, with the Chiefs holding a 9-6 advantage in the series. Their last matchup was the 2023 NFL Kickoff Game on NBC and Peacock, which the Lions won, 21-20. Montgomery scored the go-ahead game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Lions’ defense stopped a potential game-winning drive by the Chiefs in the closing minutes. The game averaged 27.5 million viewers, good for the tenth most-watched game in NBC’s Sunday Night Football package (beginning in 2006).
Mike Tirico (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (analyst), and Melissa Stark (sideline reporter) will call Lions-Chiefs. Three-time Super Bowl referee Terry McAulay is the rules analyst for all NFL games on NBC and Peacock.
Coverage begins with the Football Night in America at 7 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. Only Sunday afternoon games (or those listed as TBD) are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the initially scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to Sunday afternoon. As in prior seasons, for Week 18, the final weekend of the season, the scheduling of the Saturday, Sunday afternoon, and the Sunday night games is not assigned. Specific dates, start times, and networks for Week 18 matchups will be determined and announced following the conclusion of Week 17.
