Jack Grealish was a favorite of Tim Sherwood at Aston Villa, but Remi Garde doesn’t play favorites.

The newly appointed Villa boss relegated Grealish to the bench for his first match in charge, a scoreless draw against Manchester City that ended Villa’s seven-game losing streak.

Garde called Grealish a gifted player, but at 20-years-old, said he needed more “confidence and structure,” and that his game is still “unfinished.”

I am not here to be a nice with the people.

If you don’t tell the truth to the player it is useless. When they are good you have to tell them and when they are not good you have to tell them too.

If you don’t work and you are gifted it is not enough. But when you work hard you will be rewarded for that.

This is an important moment for Grealish, and it will be interesting to see how he responds to his new manager. He was known to have an extremely close relationship with Tim Sherwood before he was sacked, and hasn’t faced much adversity yet in his young career.

Aston Villa travels to Goodison Park to face Everton on Saturday (Watch live, 10 a.m. ET online via Live Extra).
