Robbie Rogers, Major League Soccer’s only openly gay player, spoke after a recent Galaxy practice about this week’s Supreme Court decision dismissing portions of the Defense of Marriage Act that denied federal benefits to same-sex couples.
What the recently signed LA Galaxy winger said about it:Rogers also told a story about his mom sending him a text in support of the Supreme Court decision, one that was fairly indicative of the broader, cultural shifting sands:
I told her, ‘Well, I feel great, Mom, I’m really excited about it,’ and, you know, my mom comes from a very conservative Catholic family, and one of the first things she says: ‘I’m so happy for your friends that now can get married.’
“So times are changing, definitely, and I think my mom is such a loving person, but probably a few years ago, if you would have asked her that, she probably would have had no comment.”
