Pepe: ‘It would be a scandal’ if Ronaldo didn’t win Ballon d’Or

There’s no better attacker on the planet right now than Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, and based on the opinion of many, he’s moving along the right track to snag another Ballon d’Or award, which would be his third win overall after beating out Messi as the world’s best last season.

Time and time again, Ronaldo has shown his ability to clinically finish and instinctually position himself in excellent scoring areas, and he’s also displayed astounding skill that one doesn’t notice in many other players. He’s scored 23 goals all 17 competitions, including a score in Real’s latest trouncing--a 5-1 win over La Liga opponent Rayo.

Ronaldo’s Los Blancos teammate and fellow countryman Pepe doesn’t think anyone can match the performances of the highly-talented man from Madeira.

“If any other player wins, they should be ashamed given what Cristiano has been doing, beating lots of records, scoring 17 goals in the Champions League last season, these things are almost impossible,” Pepe said, courtesy of ESPN FC.

“In three months he has scored 23 goals. What else does he need to do? He is the best player in history and I repeat, it would be a scandal and a shame if they did not give him the Ballon d’Or.”

Messi and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer presently feature as other top Ballon d’Or candidates, but it’s tough to see them trumping what Ronaldo has flashed this season. With the 29-year-old’s success, Real has also enjoyed great fortune, mustering a 13-game winning run that has exceeded last year’s 10-match streak.

Even though Carlo Ancelotti’s side is exercising splendid form, downturns can always exist, in which case Ronaldo’s individual efforts may fall short to Messi or others at a certain period of time. However, over the course of an entire season, one comes to expect fairly steady performances from Ronaldo.

On Saturday, Real’s superstar will have his aims set on bolstering his tally against Eibar on Saturday, a squad that currently sits in the middle of the league table.
