Yandy Díaz is starting at first base and batting leadoff against the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Surprisingly, this is Díaz’s first start in the field all season. Jonathan Aranda will bat second and be the DH. While this doesn’t change much of anything, it is something to monitor for 2027 fantasy drafts because Díaz will need plenty more starts in the field if he’s going to be anything but UT-only when it comes to eligibility.

Rockies sent OF Brenton Doyle (groin) on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Doyle was originally sent on rehab assignment for his oblique injury around this time last month, but had to be shut down after a new groin injury popped up. It looks like he may have a chance of being activated towards the end of next week if things go well with the Isotopes this time.

The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reports the Phillies have “been more willing to discuss higher-caliber arms” as a trade-deadline acquisition.

Originally the Phillies had just been searching for a No. 5 starter, however they appear to have expanded that search. In games not started by Zach Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, Aaron Nola or Jesús Luzardo this year, the Phillies are 5-20. A higher-caliber pitcher would probably replace Nola in the playoff rotation should the Phillies get there.

Taylor Walls (finger) is not in Tampa Bay’s lineup against the Blue Jays on Thursday.

As expected, manager Kevin Cash said last night that he would probably need a few days off. Ben Williamson is filling in at shortstop against Jays RHP Shane Bieber.

Yohendrick Piñango is starting in right field and batting first against the Rays on Thursday.

The Rays are using Casey Legumina as an opener and then turning to left-hander Ian Seymour, so this may simply be about the Blue Jays getting a left-handed hitter up against a right-handed opener. However, Piñango has now started both games since being recalled from Triple-A. Jesús Sánchez is nearing a return, but the Blue Jays appear to be sellers at the trade deadline, so Piñango may get a chance at everyday at-bats for the rest of the season. Before being recalled on Wednesday, he had hit .267/.313/.413 in 160 MLB plate appearances with five home runs and 20 RBI. He also posted a 7.1 percent barrel rate, 45.1 percent hard-hit rate, and a 75.7 mph bat speed, suggesting that there could be more in the tank.

Joe Ryan’s next start against the Athletics will be pushed back to Sunday.

He gets an extra day of rest after allowing six home runs to the Guardians in his last start. Twins beat writer Aaron Gleeman believes Connor Prielipp could draw the start on Saturday, assuming he’s activated off the injured list.

Blue Jays placed LHP Patrick Corbin on the 15-day injured list with a left teres major strain.

It’s the first absence for the durable Corbin since the end of the 2022 season, when he was stashed on the IL to keep him from picking up his 20th loss. Corbin had posted an 8.18 ERA over 11 innings in four appearances since being sent to the bullpen at the beginning of the month.

Blue Jays recalled LHP Adam Macko from Triple-A Buffalo.

With Patrick Corbin landing on the IL, Macko is able to rejoin the Toronto bullpen just five days after being demoted. He has a 5.03 ERA and a 21/9 K/BB in 19 2/3 innings this season.

Blue Jays recalled OF Davis Schneider from Triple-A Buffalo.

Schneider will get another look after hitting .298/.469/.660 with five homers in 15 games for Buffalo this month, but it could be a brief stint with Jesús Sánchez expected back soon. Schneider will likely play left field against lefties for now.

Blue Jays optioned INF Sean Keys to Triple-A Buffalo.

Keys went 6-for-36 with one homer and a 13/1 K/BB in his 12 appearances with the Blue Jays. He remains a nice corner infield prospect, but odds are that he’s not going to get a real chance to help until next year.
