Bills coach Joe Brady said the team will know more about RB Ty Johnson’s (leg) injury next week.

Johnson went down while running a route in practice on Saturday and immediately grabbed at the back of his right leg. He appeared to be grabbing at the lowest section of his hamstring, but both the back of his knee and the highest point of his calf are possible. Johnson logged a 65 percent third-down snap share and a 56 percent two-minute-drill snap share last season. Starting RB James Cook (19 percent and 31 percent) and fellow backup RB Ray Davis (16 percent and 13 percent) were also involved in both scenarios. If this is a serious injury that causes Johnson to miss time, it could meaningfully raise Cook’s fantasy-scoring ceiling.

That could be very interesting news for James Cook’s value in PPR leagues. Cook caught 33 passes last year and has broken 40 catches once in four seasons. Ty Johnson has been the team’s third-down back for most of the last two years when healthy, but probably won’t get enough receptions for this to make him more fantasy-interesting.
  • BUF Tight End #88
The Bills would save $9.6 million in cap space with a release of the veteran tight end, and Jaxson Hawes played well enough in his rookie season to believe he could step into a featured role as the No. 1 blocking tight end. Given how deep the Bills are in cap hell — they project to be over the cap by $7 million before the offseason starts — lopping off Knox definitely is in play at this point. Buscaglia also projects Curtis Samuel ($6.05 million in cap savings) and Ty Johnson ($2.45 million) as potential candidates for release as the Bills look to get cap compliant.
  • BUF Running Back #22
Davis was technically the Bills’ backup running back, handling the second-most carries and gaining 275 rushing yards on 4.7 yards per carry over the season. However, Ty Johnson was used far more often in the red zone and had 24 catches to Davis’ 10. Davis did emerge as an elite kick returner, leading the NFL in yards per return at 30.4. That just won’t provide much fantasy value heading into next season.

Cook also added 24 receiving yards on two carries. He looked tremendous for much of the game against the second-best run defense in the NFL. Unfortunately, he was held in check for much of the fourth quarter, and he lost a crucial fumble in the first quarter as the Bills were driving to go up 14-3 and take a stranglehold on the game. The Broncos then drove down the field for a go-ahead score, and the dynamic of the game changed drastically. It was a tremendous season for Cook, who led the NFL with 1,621 rushing yards on 5.2 yards per carry. He also had 12 rushing touchdowns and 291 receiving yards with another two touchdowns. He was clearly the second most important player on the Bills offense and is an RB1 for fantasy next season.

Johnson came into the weekend listed as questionable after a single limited session in practice this week, ultimately deemed inactive for the second consecutive playoff contest. Expect Ray Davis to once again fill in as the primary change of pace and clear passing situation back, as he did in the Wild Card win over the Jaguars. Also inactive for the Bills are LB Terrel Bernard, S Jordan Poyer, CB Maxwell Hairston, OT Tylan Grable, DT Phidarian Mathis, and TE Keleki Latu.

Johnson got in a limited session on Thursday, which is very similar to his Friday limited last week after two DNPs that also got him to the questionable line. Our guess is that he’s on the pessimistic side of questionable. If Johnson doesn’t play, Ray Davis will be a threat for a higher snap count than usual again and be a potential DFS play for the Divisional Round slate.
  • BUF Running Back #26
Johnson missed the Wild Card Round because of the ankle issue. Two DNPs to open this week suggest he will sit for at least one more game. Ray Davis didn’t touch the ball last week and Frank Gore Jr. caught his only target. Johnson’s likely absence will simply mean more snaps for James Cook.
  • BUF Running Back #26
He got in a limited practice before hitting the questionable line and being ruled out Sunday against the Jaguars. He’s probably a true question mark at this point to be ready against the Broncos on Saturday, with practice participation being the guiding light here. If all he can do is get in another limited Thursday session ahead of a tag, Johnson probably will sit again.

No team allowed fewer rushing yards in the regular season than Jacksonville. Their front seven lived up to the hype in the Wild Card Round, limiting Cook to 3.1 yards per carry. Week 18 aside, it was Cook’s lowest rushing output since Week 1. Cook’s fantasy backers also got to watch Josh Allen steal two rushing touchdowns. Cook should fare better next week, no matter who the Bills face in the Divisional Round. He will still be one of the best DFS options on next week’s slate.

Johnson suffered the ankle injury in the Bills’ final game of the regular season. He only practiced once this week before being listed as questionable. Ray Davis will see more work in his absence. James Cook could also be used more on passing plays, upping his fantasy value for Sunday’s DFS slate. Kicker Matt Prater is active.

Bears WR Luther Burden (groin) is “expected to miss about a month,” and the hope is he plays in Week 1 against the Panthers.

Bears WR Zavion Thomas exited practice early after suffering an apparent knee injury on Sunday.

According to CHGO Bears’ Adam Hoge, Thomas went down at practice on Sunday, “briefly grabbed his knee and then walked off with a slight limp.” Hopefully, the Bears’ speedy third-round rookie only suffered a minor injury. Bears coaches were likely hoping to get an extended look at Thomas in preseason play after he turned in a strong showing in spring practices. Bears WR Luther Burden (groin) is currently sidelined, leaving the wide receiver corps somewhat thin at the moment.

Cardinals RB Jeremiyah Love took the first carry at the team’s Red and White scrimmage on Sunday.

NFL teams have begun hosting training camp scrimmages to give fans a glimpse into elements like play calling, starters and so on. Does this development mean Love has secured the Week 1 starting role? Not necessarily, no, but this is certainly encouraging. At worst, he seemingly has decent odds of rising to the Cardinals’ RB1 role early in the year. He remains a worthwhile pick at his current ADP.

NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reports that Aaron Donald could make a decision about his future with the Rams by the end of the week.

Last week, Florio reported that Donald had hoped to make a decision early this week. The 35-year-old retired Ram has apparently kicked the can and now hopes to make a call at the end of the week. If it drags on longer than that, the Rams might not take issue with it. Simply getting Donald back in the building, even in a rotational capacity, is the ultimate goal.

The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. reports that WR Colbie Young and WR Andrei Iosivas are still competing for the Bengals’ WR3 role.

Young, the rookie, “has seemingly stacked at least one impressive catch per day.” Iosivas has had “a few notable drops,” but he reportedly “appears as polished and athletic as ever at getting open.” Both players could be worth late-round picks in best ball formats, but neither one is likely to return FLEX value in re-draft without WR1 Ja’Marr Chase or WR2 Tee Higgins missing time. Iosivas is entering a contract year, and the team just spent a fourth-round pick on Young. An in-season breakout from the rookie would make things easier from a salary cap perspective. Dehner also notes that former CFL WR Dohnte Meyers “has been a talk of camp” thus far.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Seahawks hosted free agent CB Terrion Arnold for a visit on Sunday.

Arnold visited with the Texans about a month ago, and it was recently reported that the Jets had some level of interest in him as well. Arnold’s August 13 arraignment regarding a kidnapping and robbery case is fast approaching, and the Seahawks evidently wanted to bring him in for a visit beforehand. A deal does not appear to be imminent, but things could move quickly at some point down the road.

Saints RB Devin Neal (hamstring) was seen working with trainers off to the side on Sunday.

As of Thursday, Neal was taking advantage of RB Kendre Miller’s back injury by playing well at practice. Miller is still sidelined, but now Neal is too. The two backs, along with RBs Audric Estime, Ty Chandler and CJ Donaldson, are all competing for the RB3 job. The fact that Neal is working with the training staff out in the open is a good sign, but this is worth keeping an eye on because a hamstring injury ended his rookie season prematurely.

Free agent CB Trevon Diggs worked out for the Lions this weekend.

Diggs was most recently a member of the Packers, spending less than a month with them after signing in Week 18 last year. The Packers’ secondary is a defensive weak point at the moment. Diggs’ best days are behind him, but he might be able to contribute in Detroit.

Panthers coach Dave Canales said that QB Bryce Young and the starters will play 10-20 snaps in the Panthers’ preseason Week 1 game against the Bills.

Young enters his fourth NFL season with a lot riding on the line. If he can prove himself worthy of a long-term extension, he could receive one in-season. Packers WR Jayden Reed (ankle) did not practice on Sunday.

Hopefully, this ends up being a non-issue, but we do need to keep an eye on it. Fortunately, if Reed does need to miss a few practices, he should have ample time to get right before Week 1. Reed has a chance to take on a larger role than he has had in previous seasons with the Packers’ front office thinning out the wide receiver corps this offseason.
