The former PGA TOUR member circled five birdies to offset two bogeys to match former UCLA Bruin and UC-Davis product, Matt Marshall, who carded a bogey-free 35-34=69 with three birdies. Two-time All-American at CSU-Stanislaus, Erick Justesen, survived a 4-for-2 playoff with another former Bruin, Erik Flores. Justesen, who received a sponsor exemption to last year’s Frys.com (and then missed the cut), turned in a 2-under 36-34=70; Flores carded a 38-32=70 with only seven pars. He buried seven birdies but swallowed three bogeys and a double. Marshall and Flores will be making their PGA TOUR debuts this week. Among those that failed to qualify include Bob May (70; lost in the playoff), Esteban Toledo (72), Alex Aragon (72), Vincent Johnson (72), Ted Purdy (73), Parker McLachlin (73), Sean Murphy (74), Jason Allred (75), Jason Gore (77) and Leif Olson (81). The field for the Frys.com is now complete at 132.

The former PGA TOUR member went out in the first threesome off the first tee and played with medalist Tom Johnson, but Fischer was four strokes too high to join the playoff for the final spot into the tournament proper. He’s 71-for-150 in his career with four third-place finishes, including at Montrêux in 2005. Other notables that failed to qualify today include: 68--Andy Miller ... 70--Todd Demsey ... 71--Stephen Gangluff ... 73--David Mathis.

Fischer played on the Nationwide Tour last season, with some limited success. His history at the AT&T is interesting, with three Top 16s (T-15 in 2002, T-14 in 2004 and T-16 in 2005) in his first four starts at the event. However, in his last two starts at the tournament, he has failed to make the cut.

The other co-medalist, Matthew Edwards (67-70=137), is one of the two pros to qualify for next week’s major at Congressional. Sixteen-year-old Beau Hossler and Steven Irwin, also amateurs, both shot 67-71=138 to round out the quartet. Professional Brian Locke (139) emerged from a 4-for-1 playoff for the final berth. Jeffrey Roth (139) is the first alternate from this site. Notables that failed to qualify include Todd Fischer (139) and Charlie Wi (143).
