As expected, Celtics waive Jordan Mickey to clear cap space for Hayward

This had been expected. The Celtics have an overloaded frontcourt and are working to clear out cap space to sign Gordon Hayward.

Friday morning, the Boston Celtics waived Jordan Mickey, saving $1.47 million (he had a July 15 guarantee date). He will be an unrestricted free agent once he clears waivers.

The second-round pick in 2015 had expected this and asked out of playing with the Celtics’ Summer League team in Utah and Las Vegas to train on his own. (Several people in Las Vegas questioned that move to me, Summer League is there for exposure of players such as Mickey to other teams and good potential foreign landing spots.)

Mickey played in 41 games for the Celtics across two seasons, but his time on the court dwindled last season.

He could get a training camp invite from another NBA squad, start the season in the G-League, or field contract offers from European teams.
