Contreras not in the starting lineup on Thursday

William Contreras is not in Milwaukee’s starting lineup on Thursday against the Guardians.

It appears to just be a routine day off for the veteran backstop, who is hitting .276/.308/.414 through his first 65 plate appearances in June with two homers and nine RBI. Contreras’ power has been disappointing, as it was in 2025, and he now has just a .401 slugging percentage over his last 954 plate appearances. Gary Sánchez will draw the start at catcher against Guards LHP Parker Messick.
Brewers travel to Pittsburgh for Sunday Leadoff
Looking to stay alive in the NL Wild Card race, the Pirates welcome the NL Central-leading Brewers to PNC Park for a divisional showdown on MLB Sunday Leadoff at 12pm ET on Peacock and NBCSN.

Heliot Ramos had two homers, a triple and five RBI as the Giants demolished the Blue Jays 10-1 on Monday.

This would have been a three-homer game in most ballparks and sort of was in San Francisco anyway; Ramos scored on the triple to right-center when the throw got past the third baseman and went into the dugout. Statcast says the triple, hit a projected 399 feet, would have been a homer in 29 parks. Ramos later had an opposite-field homer, hit 349 feet down the right field line, and a 110-mph, 434 foot bomb to left-center. Even his groundout tonight was hit 112 mph. Just a week ago, the Giants were being slow to activate Ramos from the IL because of concerns about how he’d fit in with Casey Schmitt playing the outfield. However, those went away with Matt Chapman getting hurt, and Ramos has hit .313 with four homers, eight RBI and eight runs scored in eight games since returning.

Landen Roupp limited the Blue Jays to one run and three hits over eight innings to snap his losing skid Monday.

Roupp was 0-7 in his previous 11 starts, with the Giants losing all 11 of those games. Roupp didn’t dominate with five strikeouts, 11 whiffs and a 26 percent CSW tonight, but he didn’t need to. The Blue Jays never put together any real threats. They had just two plate appearances with a RISP, going 0-for-1 with a walk. Roupp is 6-8 with a 4.27 ERA overall. He’ll finish the first half with a home start against the Rockies.

Kevin Gausman gave up seven runs — four earned — and walked five in 5 1/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Giants.

He did strike out eight, at least. Gausman had walked just 24 batters in 18 starts coming into tonight, but he does typically have one start per year in which he walks five. He did so once last year and once in 2024. He did it twice in 2023, but that was just keeping pace after he went without one in 2022. This goes as Gausman’s fifth straight loss. Part of that is the Jays’ offensive struggles, but Gausman’s weaker outings have been particularly weak; in his last 11 starts, he’s allowed one or no runs five times and at least four runs in the remaining six outings. He’ll face the Padres on Sunday.

Kazuma Okamoto hit his 20th homer to score the Blue Jays’ only run Monday against the Giants.

Okamoto hit a 412-foot homer off Landen Roupp in the sixth. He’s now tied with Munetaka Murakami for most homers among rookies this year, though he has 31 games on Murakami with his countryman on the shelf due to a hamstring strain. Okamoto entered tonight 3-for-25 with no extra-base hits in his previous seven games.

Brandon Pfaadt fanned six in five innings as the Diamondbacks shut out the Padres 8-0 on Monday.

Ryan Thompson and Drey Jameson each pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game. Pfaadt walked none and allowed four hits, all of which were singles. His stuff doesn’t seem to be any better than it was at the beginning of the year, but he’s given the D-backs two very effective starts since returning from the minors. He’ll take on the Dodgers on Saturday.

Walker Buehler surrendered seven runs in five innings Monday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

Buehler struck out four and walked one. He gave up two homers, the first of which was a three-run shot from Max Kepler. Buehler allowed exactly one run in all five of his starts in June, but he’s opened July by giving up 16 runs in nine innings, leaving him with a 5.07 ERA. The Padres don’t have any better alternatives right now, so Buehler should face the Blue Jays on Saturday.

Max Kepler went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in the rout of the Padres on Monday.

Kepler singled in a run in the first and hit a three-run homer off Walker Buehler in the third. He entered the night 2-for-19 with no extra-base hits, RBI or walks since returning from his steroid suspension. He’ll play regularly against righties if the production is there, but nothing so far seems especially promising.

Geraldo Perdomo went 2-for-4 and hit his sixth homer Monday against the Padres.

Perdomo’s solo homer left the bat at 97.8 mph but was sent 377 feet to right, giving the Diamondbacks a 7-0 lead in the sixth. Perdomo has five hits the last two days, bringing his OPS back over .700 to .723. He has 32 RBI and 40 runs scored through 88 games. In his first 88 games last year, he had 59 RBI and 48 runs scored.

Brice Turang delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning Monday in the Brewers’ 4-3 win over the Cardinals.

The Brewers got all of their runs in the seventh. David Hamilton doubled in the first two runs, and Turang then gave Milwaukee a 4-3 lead that held up the rest of the game. Turang has played about as well as any second baseman in the majors this season, but he was left off the NL All-Star team in favor of Ozzie Albies and Luis Arraez. Turang slumped some in June, but he’s hit .366 with a homer, four doubles and six RBI in his last nine games, pushing his OPS back up to .817.

Shane Drohan yielded three runs — one earned — in six innings Monday in a win over the Cardinals.

Drohan completed six innings for the second time as a major leaguer, throwing a mere 85 pitches to get his 18 outs. He struck out only two and gave up 13 hard-hit balls, but he mostly kept the ball on the ground and surrendered just four singles and two doubles. He’ll face the Pirates on Saturday to finish the first half.
