Orioles option Cam Sanders back to Triple-A

It took facing the Royals to get Detmers his first win since June 16 and fourth overall in 25 starts. It’s the third time in his career that he’s completed eight innings and the eighth time he’s struck out at least 10. Detmers certainly would have been a better bet down the stretch in fantasy leagues had the Angels sent him to a contender to the deadline. He’ll take on the Rangers next time out.

Joyce edged out Jacob Misiorowski for the hardest pitches of the night, topping out at 104.5 and 104.4 mph. Misiorowski couldn’t do better than a measly 104.2 mph. Expect Joyce to keep getting save chances for the Angels when things line up properly. However, they shouldn’t be using him on back-to-back days in his first month back from shoulder surgery, and they’re probably going to have only so many leads over the final six weeks.

Dobnak has always been more about the groundout than the strikeout, and his only previous start with six K’s came way back on Sept. 25, 2019 against the Tigers. He’s now sporting a 1.73 ERA in six starts and two relief appearances for the Royals, and even if he fades some, it seems pretty likely that Kansas City will want to bring him back in 2027. And they will be able to, since even though his five-year, $9.25 million deal with the Twins is ancient history, he has only three-plus years of service time and will be eligible for arbitration for just the first time this winter.

Craig Kimbrel, on the other hand, got four outs between the sixth and seventh to keep the game scoreless. For one night anyway, that’s advantage Kimbrel in the Royals’ closer battle. Steven Cruz, who is still probably the favorite for saves at this point, didn’t work tonight after picking up a save Friday.

Along with collecting 100 percent of the game’s runs batted in, Schanuel had one more hit than the Royals lineup tonight. He also drove in four runs Friday, and he’s now up to .279/.356/.392 on the season. It’s disappointing he hasn’t added any power at age 24, but he’s on pace for a 2.5-2.8 WAR season, which is a nice improvement from the last two years. He had totaled 2.9 bWAR in 308 career games coming into 2026.

Vargas’ home run was his eighth of the season. He hit a three-run shot off Braves reliever Danny Young in the ninth inning. Vargas was hitting .404 on the season after a four-hit game on May 1 against the Cubs, but is 55-for-255 (.215) with two home runs, 38 RBI, 28 runs scored and three stolen bases in 84 games since. It turns out that spending a significant amount of FAAB on Vargas, a 35-year-old journeyman, early in the season was a complete waste. He’s hitting .266 with a .720 OPS and 59 RBI on the year.

Misiorowski struck out only six tonight, one more than his season low, but he did generate 17 whiffs. His 14 sliders on the night produced nine swings, which turned into eight whiffs and a 71-mph groundout. We assume he would have thrown more, but John Smoltz kept telling him not to. Misiorowski moved to 12-5 with a 1.75 ERA. He’ll face the Braves next weekend.

Ashby has been the Brewers’ win specialist in relief, of course, but it’s still rather surprising that this is his very first save. He got the call tonight with Trevor Megill due another day off and Abner Uribe on the IL. He’s probably looking at more eighth-inning duty and fewer wins while Uribe is out.

It’s not saying much, but this was Wrobleski’s best start in his last four. He was an All-Star a month ago, but since moving to 11-2 with a 2.63 ERA on July 21, he’s gone 0-3 with an 8.69 ERA since. He should face the Pirates next week, but at this rate, he might not finish the season in the rotation.

Contreras hit the ball in excess of 100 mph all four times up tonight, which is the kind of performance that suggests his slump really is over. Not only was he 0-for-20 in his last six games, but he was hitting just .146 with two RBI in his last 22 contests.
