Yankees RHP prospect Harold Cortijo struck out six hitters over five innings of one-run baseball on Wednesday for Low-A Charleston.
Cortijo, 20, allowed four hits, and he walked two. In two starts with the RiverDogs, he’s fanned 11 hitters and allowed three runs with an 11/2 K/BB ratio. Drafted with the 422nd pick out of Seminole State CC, Cortijo has intrigued scouts with a 90-94 mph fastball that features plenty of movement, and a change that has fade from the same arm speed as the heater. The question mark here is the slider; as it gets slurvy and doesn’t offer the tilt or depth you’d like to see in an offering. If it can get to average, Cortijo can start. If not, that fastball/change could make him excellent in relief.
