Danny Ellis turned in a 6-under-par 32-33=65 in the opening round of the Chitimacha Louisiana Open to share the 18-hole lead with John Peterson.

The Clemson product started his day on the 10th hole in the windy afternoon wave and managed to go his first 12 holes without a blemish, circling five birdies in the process. After a bogey at the par-4 fourth, he polished off his day with birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-5 seventh holes. Ellis is a veteran of 82 Web.com Tour events, making exactly half his cuts, and 113 PGA TOUR events. We haven’t seen much of him since his his last full season of 2007, but a T32 finish at the PGA TOUR Q School has him back in the fold. He has never won on the Web.com or PGA TOUR.

In the final two rounds, Ellis was seen spiraling down the “first-round-leader” funnel. He shot 82-75 in the final two rounds.

Ellis has been replaced in the field by Neal Lancaster. Lancaster’s best finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach was a tie for eighth place in 1999.
