Patton Kizzire earned medalist honors with an 8-under-par 64 at Colonial Country Club. Abs Mawji earned the second spot with a 7-under-par 65, with Deane and Alex Aragon getting the last two spots with rounds of 66. Deane’s only start on the tour this season was a the EDS Byron Nelson, where he finished tied for 50th place.

Deane did play in three PGA Tour events last year, but failed to make the cut in any of them. He did play in the Nationwide Tour’s Moonah Classic in Australia this year, but he failed to make the weekend cut.

Deane bogeyed the par-4 first hole, but then added seven birdies in his next 14 holes to make into the Viking Classic. Medalist honors go to Greg Huxman with a round of 7-under-par 65, which had one bogey, an eagle and six birdies. The last two spots in the field were taken by Matt Fast and Matthew Swan. Both players tied Deane with rounds of 6-under-par 66.

The Monday qualifier was an aggregate 1-over-par through 29 holes when the horn sounded this afternoon. He was on the par-4 13th hole where had already taken four strokes (due a penalty off the tee) and was still 155 yards from the hole. So, he must not have been confident that even if he scrambled for a double bogey that he wasn’t going to make the cut. And frankly, it was probably the right decision.
