According to the Associated Press, LeBron James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio, plans to throw a three-hour rally on the University of Akron campus to show its support for LeBron James. “LeBron Appreciation Day,” which was organized by local community leaders, will take place this Saturday. It will take place at InfoCision stadium, the arena on the University of Akron campus where James accepted his 2nd MVP award.
James is reportedly aware of the event, but the leaders of the event are unsure whether or not James will attend. James recently refused to assure prospective Cavalier coach that he would be in Cleveland next season, one of the strongest indicators yet that James may be leaning towards leaving the Cavaliers unless they make a major move.
Compared to the over-the-top campaigns, celebrity endorsements, and county re-namings that have taken place surrounding James and Wade’s impending free-agency, “LeBron Appreciation Day” seems like fairly small potatoes. Whether that makes this event endearingly authentic or laughably inadequate likely depends on the eye of the beholder. All I can say for sure is that this jumps over the bar set by the “We Are LeBron” song. Then again, so does everything.
