According to the Associated Press, former NBA guard Orien Greene has received a two-year suspension for tampering with a urine test. Green had been playing for Eclips Jet MyGuide Amsterdam, a professional team in Amsterdam. (Obvious joke that comes to mind -- getting a two-year suspension for failing a drug test is bad enough. When you get a two-year suspension for failing a drug test in Amsterdam, you know you messed up.)
Greene’s suspension is retroactive to March 12th, 2009. Teddy Gipson, one of Greene’s teammates, received a six-month suspension when he admitted to helping Greene tamper with the test.
Greene, who started his college career with the University of Florida but later transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette, played for the Kings, Pacers and Celtics in three NBA seasons before going overseas. He was never much of an offensive player, but managed to squeeze into rotations thanks to his length and defensive acumen. In the 2005-06 season, Greene played in 80 games for the Celtics, and even started five games for Boston. After that season, the Celtics let Greene walk and purchased the draft rights to Rajon Rondo from the Phoenix Suns. I think it’s safe to say that the Celtics are happy with how things worked out.
