Rockets keeping McGrady’s progress quiet
There was a time when Tracy McGrady was considered the future of the NBA. Thanks to a series of devastating injuries, McGrady is now just another guy with a ripe expiring contract. More than a few teams would be interested in using McGrady’s contract to give themselves some cap room in the summer of 2010. Some of them would even like Tracy McGrady to play basketball for them if they traded for him. That’s where things get tricky.
According to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojanrowski, McGrady has been working out with legendary trainer Tim Grover for the past few months. He’s waiting for the Rockets to trade him, but the Rockets aren’t willing to let any potential trade partners actually see how McGrady’s doing. Wojanrowski quotes a league executive as saying that the Rockets won’t allow teams a “casual sitting” in Grover’s gym to see McGrady’s progress. Any team that wants McGrady to play for them is going to have to take a fairly substantial leap of faith.
McGrady appeared in six games for the Rockets this season, and managed to score more than three points in only one of them. McGrady is still committed to playing in the NBA, but the sad truth is that the 30-year old McGrady is already a shell of his former basketball self.
