The last two seasons have been disappointing ones in Jacksonville and the hope is that a change in head coaches will move the franchise in a better direction in 2025.
For Liam Coen’s arrival to have that kind of impact, the Jags will need quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s play to rebound to at least where it was in the 2022 season. During an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio this week, Coen said that the team will be doing some work with Lawrence on his footwork when the offseason program begins next week but said that true improvement won’t come by focusing only on the quarterback.
“For us to help him truly, also from a schematic standpoint, we’ve got to be able to run the football a little bit better,” Coen said. “Give him some help from that standpoint, take a little pressure off, while also playing some good, sound, fundamental, hard defense on the other side of the ball. To be able to ultimately get the best out of our quarterback, we gotta be able to help.”
The Jaguars have signed four offensive linemen in free agency and they could continue addressing the area in the draft, but they have defensive needs to address as well and the long list of areas in need of improvement may make an immediate turnaround a tall order in Jacksonville.
The NFL will play seven international games in 2025 — that number is set in stone.
But as the game continues to grow globally, there could be more international games in 2026.
NFL executive vice president, club business, international & league events Peter O’Reilly explained on Monday that the league has an “eye toward” raising the number of international contests next year.
“Right now the resolution that the owners passed is for up to eight regular season games. That’s part of the current resolution. That does not include what we call the club opportunity model, which the Jaguars take advantage of. So, this year the seven is the six [NFL international games] plus the Jaguars game [at Wembley Stadium]. We have the ability to go up to eight via the resolution, not including [the] Jaguars game — or games. That’s the framework at which we look at 2026.”
With their home stadium undergoing an extensive renovation, the Jaguars could push that number of international games to nine or 10 in 2026. The agreement between the franchise and Jacksonville notes that the club can play a total of six international games between 2025 and 2027, with a maximum of three in the first two years. The team is set to use just one of those in 2025 by hosting its usual game at Wembley Stadium in London.
Set to play at a reduced-capacity EverBank Stadium in 2026, it stands to reason that the Jaguars could then play two international games that year. And if that’s the case, the NFL could potentially have 10 international games — eight from the league, plus the Jags’ two.
The league has noted that 2024 was its most-watched season outside the United States. As the NFL continues to position itself as a rising global brand, it’s reason able to expect the number of games played outside the country will continue to increase.
The Jaguars parted ways with an offensive lineman on Friday.
The team announced that they have waived Dieter Eiselen. Eiselen joined the Jaguars’ practice squad last November and signed a future contract with the team after the end of the season.
Eiselen did not appear in any games for Jacksonville. He played 10 games for the Texans in 2023 and appeared in 14 games for the Bears between 2020 and 2022.
Eiselen was born in South Africa and became the first non-kicker from that country to be active for an NFL game when he made his initial appearance for the Bears.
Teams attending Penn State’s Pro Day on Friday will not get to see one of the top prospects in this year’s draft class in action.
Via Adam Schefter of ESPN, agent Drew Rosenhaus said edge rusher Abdul Carter will not work out during tomorrow’s event.
“He is still finishing up rehab on the shoulder injury he had from the Boise State game,” Rosenhaus told Schefter. “He may still do a workout for teams sometime in mid-April.”
Carter, 21, was the Big Ten defensive player of the year in 2024, finishing the season with 12.0 sacks and 24 tackles for loss in 16 games. He also recorded four passes defended and two forced fumbles.
He is widely expected to be a top-five pick in next month’s draft, if not one of the top two selections.
The NFL will play seven regular-season games outside the United States in 2025.
Although the league has discussed as many as eight international games, the NFL confirmed that the seven teams that have already announced they will give up home games to play overseas will be all of them this year.
Three regular-season games will be played in London, with the Browns and Jets giving up home games to play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Jaguars giving up a home game to play at Wembley Stadium.
For the second straight year, the opening Friday of the NFL season will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with the Chargers playing a home game at Arena Corinthians.
Germany will host its fourth NFL regular-season game, and for the first time that game will be in Berlin, with the Colts making Olympiastadion their home.
Spain will have its first NFL regular-season game with the Dolphins playing a home game at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.
And Ireland will get an NFL game for the first time with the Steelers playing at Croke Park in Dublin.
The league is showing no signs of slowing down on its aspirations for international growth, and 2026 will include the first regular-season game in Melbourne, Australia. It won’t be a surprise if the NFL is eventually playing 16 regular-season games a year outside the United States, with every team in the league traveling overseas once.
