76ers claim Glenn Robinson III off waivers

If the 76ers see a talented Robinson on the waiver wire, they pounce.

So, after claiming Thomas Robinson to reach the salary floor and get a better-than-free look at the recent No. 5 pick, Philadelphia again sprung into action when the Timberwolves waived Glenn Robinson III.

The 76ers claimed Robinson, the No. 40 pick in last year’s draft.

Philadelphia coach Brett Brown, via Dei Lynam of CSN Philly:

“We are excited to have him,” Brown said before Saturday’s game against the Hawks. “We liked him when we looked at him prior to the draft. Part of our plan is identifying young people who have a chance to be keepers. He ticks a lot of boxes in regards to it being a no-brainer in why we would be interested in him. Funny enough I coached his dad in San Antonio for a little while.”

Robinson has the frame and raw ability of an NBA small forward, but he has yet to put it together – not that he had much opportunity in Minnesota. He played just 108 minutes in 25 games for the Timberwolves. The biggest negative indicator on his career is them choosing Justin Hamilton over him.

Did they cut Robison too soon, or did they have good reason?

The question is worth exploring for the 76ers, who add Robinson the many talented second rounders they’re trying to develop.

They can make Robinson, who signed a one-year contract, a restricted free agent after the season. Unlike K.J. McDaniels, who also signed a one-year deal in a similar position before being traded, Philadelphia probably doesn’t have to worry about matching a big offer with Robinson. If he warrants anything above the minimum, things went very well the last few weeks of the season.
