JaVale McGee suffers another serious injury

JaVale McGee, in his fourth season with the Nuggets, has started just 10 games for Denver.

That number won’t go up anytime soon.

He had been coming off the bench behind Timofey Mozgov, anyway, but McGee won’t have a chance to capitalize on his talent and earn a starting role. After a stress fracture in his leg ended his 2013-14 season after just five games, McGee is again battling major injury.

Nuggets coach Brian Shaw, via Chris Dempsey of The Denver Post:

“I heard six weeks at one point,” Shaw said. “I don’t know. I don’t think he’s anywhere close to coming back right now.”
“It’s unfortunate that he hasn’t been able to consistently be out there on the floor for us,” Shaw said. “From what I understand the area that he had the surgery on - the stress fracture - is fine. I think the muscle around that area, he’s done some damage to. So that’s what’s been very painful; it’s been hot. So that has to calm down. So I think he’s going to have to miss a significant amount of time for that to calm down.”

Announcement: ProBasketballTalk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $150,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Monday’s NBA games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $20,000. Starts at 7pm ET on Monday. Here’s the FanDuel link.

McGee has played only one game in the last three weeks, so the Nuggets have already begun to adjust to his absence. Besides, they’ve really struggled with him on the court, especially defensively. However, more minutes for rookie Jusuf Nurkic isn’t really the short-term answer Denver needs, either.

I just hope McGee can get back to providing his unique brand of entertainment.
