This summer, Julyan Stone — the former Nugget and Raptors combo guard — signed a two-year deal to play for Italian league champion Reyer Venezia.

Then the Charlotte Hornets called, interested in signing him as a third-string guard to round out its roster.

And from there, things have gotten sticky. Stone has an incredibly good reason to want to play stateside — to be close to his very ill father.

However, the contract Stone signed with Reyer Venezia did not have an NBA out, which has made things more complicated, something Rick Bonnell explained at the Charlotte Observer.

The agent for guard Julyan Stone still hopes to work out a compromise with an Italian pro team, allowing Stone to sign with the Charlotte Hornets....

“The Hornets have been super supportive,” Stone’s agent, Giovanni Funiciello, said in a phone interview with the Observer Monday....

Stone said on Instagram that he and Funiciello have proposed numerous compromises with Reyer Venezia in pursuit of a release. Funiciello is hopeful of coming to a resolution sometime this week.

Most importantly, we wish the best for Stone’s father.

Usually, these things get worked out, and it’s just a matter of how much money the European team gets. There seems to be a sticking point here — without an NBA out clause that team has leverage — but hopefully, this is just a negotiation process, and it gets dealt with. Take this too far, and agents will remember next time Reyer Venezia comes calling about one of their players.
