Report: Kings signed head coach Tyrone Corbin to contract for remainder of the season
The Kings shocked the NBA world by firing their head coach, Mike Malone, early on in what appeared to be a successful campaign for the team this season.
Malone seemed to have his team playing solid defensive basketball, while getting its most important player, DeMarcus Cousins, to buy in and stop behaving like a petulant child on the court the way he has in the past.
But ownership wanted to see a flashier, up-tempo product on the floor, despite the fact that the roster isn’t really suited to playing that particular style.
Tyrone Corbin was promoted to run the team on an interim basis, and rumblings of some bigger names coming in have surfaced. It seems, however, that Corbin may be allowed to remain at the helm for the remainder of the season. From James Ham of Cowbell Kingdom (via HoopsHype):
According to an NBA source, the Sacramento Kings inked Tyrone Corbin to a contract to coach the team through the end of the 2014-15 season more than a week ago. Corbin originally signed a two-year contract as an assistant coach under Michael Malone. When Malone was relieved of his duties on Dec. 14, Corbin was named to an interim role.
This is the second time in his career that Corbin has taken over a team mid-season. The former NBA player stepped in for Jerry Sloan with the Utah Jazz during the 2010-11 season. He coached the Jazz to a 112-146 record from 2011-2014, before being let go on April 21, 2014.
This is more about a bigger name coach not wanting to try to right a sinking ship midway through the season than it is a vote of confidence in favor of Corbin’s long-term chances.
There’s very little practice time during the season, and any coach would prefer to take over from the beginning of training camp, where a new system can be properly installed. George Karl and Mark Jackson are two of the more prominent names that have come up in rumors where the Kings’ job is concerned, but it looks like they’ll have to wait until the offseason to get that chance.
