The Dallas Mavericks have a bit of a hole at the point guard spot, and not much depth at the two (behind Wesley Matthews, whenever he returns to form).

They have turned to a fan favorite and solid NBA rotation player J.J. Barea to fill it.

Barea and the Mavericks have worked out a contract, something first reported by a newspaper in Barea’s native Puerto Rico and since confirmed by CBS’s Ken Berger and NBA.com’s David Aldridge.

This is a solid pickup for the Mavs. Barea played almost 18 minutes a game last season, averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 assists a game, and was a guy that Rick Carlisle could count on. He was a key part of Dallas’ Game 4 win over the Rockets in the playoffs.

So long as Dallas gets more help at the guard spots to go with Barea and Devin Harris, those two can be respectable parts of the rotation.
