The Texans could use all hands on deck as they try for their first win of the season in Week 4, but it will be a little while before they know if cornerback Derek Stingley will be ready to go against the Titans.
Stingley injured his oblique in Sunday’s 17-10 loss to the Jaguars and head coach DeMeco Ryans gave an update on his status at a Monday press conference. Ryans said, via a transcript from the team, that Stingley is day-to-day as a result of the injury.
Ryans said that Stingley “tried to push through it” on Sunday, but wasn’t able to do so.
Stingley had one pass defensed against Jacksonville and had eight tackles over the first two weeks of the season.
Longtime NFL executive Bobby Grier has died at the age of 82.
Grier joined the Patriots as an offensive backfield coach in 1981 and worked as a coach and scout before becoming their director of pro scouting in 1993. He went on to be their director of player personnel and vice president of player personnel before moving on to the Texans in 2000. He worked for the Texans through 2016 and worked as a consultant with the Dolphins in recent years.
“Bobby Grier was a man of tremendous integrity,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in a statement. “He broke barriers and built bridges, and his legacy will forever be part of our franchise’s history. We are grateful for his years of service and the impact he had on so many people within our organization and across the NFL. My thoughts are with his family and all who are mourning his loss.”
Grier’s son Chris is currently the General Manager of the Dolphins. His son Mike is the General Manager of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks.
The Jaguars kept the Texans in Sunday’s game, but they did what they had to do to end Houston’s winning streak in Jacksonville.
The Jaguars won 17-10, beating the Texans at home for the first time since 2017. The Jaguars are 2-0, while the defending AFC
South champions fell to 0-3 and three games back in the division.
Jacksonville had control the entire game, but a Trevor Lawrence interception, and a play later, a busted coverage, had the Jaguars having to go down to the wire to win.
At the two-minute warning, Lawrence completed a 46-yard pass to Brian Thomas to the Houston 10. Thomas had trouble with drops but had one of the biggest plays of the day. It set up Travis Etienne’s 10-yard run on the next play, a touchdown the Texans appeared to allow on purpose to get the ball back with plenty of time remaining.
Houston had 1:48 left after Etienne’s touchdown and reached the Jacksonville 28 before the Jaguars defense answered the call again. Josh Hines-Allen hit C.J. Stroud’s arm, and a pass intended for Christian Kirk was intercepted by Antonio Johnson at the 4-yard line with 20 seconds left.
All three of the Texans’ turnovers came in the fourth quarter. With 3:47 left, Collins fumbled at the Jacksonville 21 with Tyson Campbell knocking it loose and Devin Lloyd recovering it. The game was tied 10-10 at the time, with Lloyd’s recovery setting up the game-winning, 83-yard touchdown drive.
The Jaguars allowed only 271 and hit Stroud six times, sacked him twice and intercepted him twice. Jourdan Lewis had the team’s other interception. Hines-Allen had three quarterback hits, half a sack and two tackles.
Stroud was 25-of-38 for 204 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, with Collins catching eight passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.
The Jaguars had only 291 yards as the Texans matched their defensive effort. Lawrence was 20-of-40 for 222 yards with an interception.
Texans star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. will not return today.
It appeared that was the case in the first half as he stood on the sideline without a helmet after leaving the game with an abdominal injury.
Stingley had one pass defensed and a defensive pass interference penalty in the end zone before leaving.
The Texans are thin at the position, having started the game without Jaylin Smith (hamstring).
The Jaguars saw wide receiver Dyami Brown leave the game in the first half with a shoulder injury. He is questionable to return.
Brown has two catches for 7 yards.
The Jaguars had a chance to take a two-score lead in the third quarter, but Cam Little missed a 47-yard field goal wide right. He made a 39-yarder earlier in the quarter to give Jacksonville a 10-3 lead.
The Texans, the lowest-scoring team in the NFL with 28 points in their first two games, again are having a hard time moving the ball. C.J. Stroud has been under constant pressure, with Travon Walker getting a sack and Josh Hines-Allen two quarterback hits.
Not that the Jaguars have been any better.
The Jaguars lead the Texans 7-3 at halftime in one of the most mundane games of the season.
Houston has outgained Jacksonville 107-88, with 58 of the Jaguars’ yards coming on their touchdown drive. The Jaguars cashed in with good field position after Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 52-yard field goal wide right, as Bhayshul Tuten scored from the 1.
The Jaguars likely would have settled for a red zone field goal if not for Derek Stingley’s pass interference penalty in the end zone. The Texans star cornerback missed much of the first half with a rib injury that has him questionable to return.
Lawrence is 11-of-22 for 90 yards, while Stroud is 13-of-20 for 69 yards.
The Texans are 3-for-9 on third down and the Jaguars are 1-for-6.
Jaguars wide receiver Dyami Brown appeared to injure his left shoulder late in the first half.
