After former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis’ unexpected passing, Vernon Davis said his brother’s death was a mystery. It remains that way more than a year later.
The Broward County Medical Examiner released its autopsy report on Davis on Friday, listing the cause of death as “undetermined,” per Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post.
Davis was found unresponsive at his grandmother’s home in South Florida on April 1, 2024. Vernon Davis has said Vontae collapsed after getting out of the sauna.
Police said foul play was not suspected.
Vontae was 35 years old.
The Dolphins made him a first-round pick in 2009, and he was in his 10th season when he abruptly retired during a game with the Bills. He spent six seasons in Indianapolis, earning two Pro Bowls.
The authorities apparently won’t be taking any further action in response to the recent incident that resulted in police arriving at the home of Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill. The NFL still could.
Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640 reports that the league has requested the the audio of the 911 call placed by Hill’s mother-in-law on Monday.
If accurate, this means that the NFL is investigating the situation. And the NFL could take action under the Personal Conduct Policy, regardless of whether no action is taken against Hill in the criminal justice system.
The biggest potential impediment continues to be the inability of the league to compel cooperation by non-employees of the league or any of its teams. There’s no subpoena power. If Hill’s wife and/or mother-in-law refuse to cooperate, it becomes virtually impossible for the NFL to come to any reliable conclusions about what did and didn’t happen.
Separate from any action the league could take is the question of whether the Dolphins will get to the point where they’ve had enough. Hill has been involved in several controversies since coming to Miami three years ago. After the regular-season finale, he said he wants to leave.
While he continues to be the best player on the team, the Dolphins would be foolish to not consider life without Hill’s periodic issues. And the minute his talent begins to slip, it should surprise no one if the Dolphins move on.
Last year, Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill filed for divorce from his wife. He claimed it was all a mistake, and that he fired the “fucking bonehead” who had done it.
This week, Hill was served with divorce papers filed by his wife.
Via the Miami Herald, the papers were filed after the incident that resulted in police being called to Hill’s home. No charges were filed.
The personal developments come at a time when Hill’s professional future still seems murky. He said he wants to leave the Dolphins after the regular-season finale. He then embarked on a Super Bowl week media tour aimed at putting the toothpaste back in the tube.
At the league meetings, coach Mike McDaniel said the team is “fully planning” to move forward with Hill.
No arrests were made when police responded to a call at Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and he will not face any charges related to the incident in the future.
Both Hill and his wife told police that an argument between them never became physical despite Hill’s mother-in-law calling police to report an assault. A spokesperson for the Dolphins confirmed on Wednesday that police were called to Hill’s residence and the case has been closed.
“On Monday, we were informed that the police were called to Tyreek Hill’s home and after conversations with Tyreek and members of his family, the police departed the residence without further incident and the case was closed,” the statement said. “We have since been in communication with Tyreek and the NFL and will have no further comment on the matter.”
Hill’s wife told police that she is filing for divorce and her attorney told TMZ on Wednesday that “family matters are personal and respect the parties’ privacy as it plays out.”
Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Shemar Turner’s pre-draft process has been hindered by an injury, but he’s still generating interest around the league.
Turner had surgery to repair a stress fracture before his final season with the Aggies and had to pull out of the Senior Bowl because of issues related to that operation. He did not participate in the Scouting Combine either, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports he got a positive report at a medical recheck in Indianapolis.
Per the report, Turner has lined up visits with the Colts, Buccaneers, and Dolphins in the coming days. He has already met with the Cowboys, Cardinals, and Eagles.
Turner had 115 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and three forced fumbles in 43 college games.
