Kyrie Irving suffered a calf strain in December while recovering from a torn left ACL.

Irving was targeting a return last March, but the Mavericks’ lottery odds weren’t the only factor that prevented him from playing last season. Irving’s calf strain set him back eight weeks, which means he wouldn’t have been ready to return until well after their season ended. He will play in one of their two preseason games in China against the Rockets this weekend, though it hasn’t been decided which one.

Irving has not appeared in a basketball game since suffering a torn left ACL on March 31, 2025. During Mavericks media day, the veteran point guard said that he’s “ready to kick some butt,” which is great news for Dallas and fantasy managers. However, Irving has not played more than 65 regular-season games since the 2018-19 campaign. The team may place early restrictions on Irving’s playing time, but he can still offer high value in any fantasy format.

Irving has not appeared in a game since suffering a torn left ACL in March 2025. While there was some optimism last summer that the point guard was ahead of schedule, he did not play at all during the 2025-26 campaign. Based on Irving’s words during a recent livestream, he’s on track to be good to go for the start of the 2026-27 season. “I am definitely close to being over at 100% in terms of my ACL recovery,” Irving said on Friday. “It’s been a while now…I’m so grateful that I’ve had the time to heal and just experiment with my body more on the court and off the court in the weight room & just pushing myself to the limit.” With Cooper Flagg coming off a Rookie of the Year season and the Mavericks adding another lottery pick to the mix this summer, it will be interesting to see where Irving fits in the rebuild under new lead executive Masai Ujiri. A healthy Irving can provide top-25 fantasy value, but his playing time could be limited early on for injury management reasons.
  • DAL Guard #11
According to Irving’s agent, “this is about Kyrie being 1000% when he comes back and giving himself the best chance to chase a championship next season.” Dallas is near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, and the team has no incentive to rush Irving back before he’s fully healthy. Fantasy managers holding out hope for an end-of-season return can finally drop him and free up a valuable IL spot.

Davis injured his left hand during the fourth quarter of Thursday’s loss to the Jazz. According to Charania, a second opinion on the injury’s severity will be sought. If surgery is required, Davis could miss “a number of months.” If surgery isn’t needed, Davis may be looking at a six-week timeline at least. With the Mavericks’ forward/center being the subject of trade rumors, an extended absence would likely put those to rest. As for Dallas’ approach to the rest of the season, losing Davis could affect Kyrie Irving’s return from the ACL tear he suffered last March. Dallas’s first-round pick in June’s draft is the last one that they’ll have complete control over until 2031, so the front office could decide that punting on the rest of this season is in the franchise’s best interest.
  • DAL Guard #11
Irving tore the ACL in his left knee in March, with his absence prompting the Mavericks to sign D’Angelo Russell in free agency and re-sign Dante Exum. However, general manager Nico Harrison’s comments in July that Irving was “ahead of schedule” in his recovery sparked optimism that the point guard could return sooner than expected. Irving clarified in his recent livestream that he has no timeline for a return to action. “There’s no timetable for when I’m coming back, so please don’t ask me when I’m coming back,” Irving said. “Please don’t badger me with all the questions like, ‘Hey, if you’re healthy by November, what do you think about it?’ Please don’t badger me with any questions, guys. I’m going to be ready when I’m ready.” Russell is expected to assume the starting point guard duties in Irving’s absence, raising his fantasy ceiling. Someone else to track during the preseason is undrafted rookie Ryan Nembhard, who has received positive reviews in training camp.
  • DAL Point Guard #11
Irving was injured in early March and does not have a concrete timeline for returning to game action. However, Harrison’s words about the point guard will spark optimism regarding his return to the court. “Kyrie’s ahead of schedule, but we kind of knew he would be because of the way he attacks his rehab,” Harrison said, according to the Dallas Hoops Journal. “He’s going two or three times a day. As much as he wants to rush it, we don’t want him to. But he’s going to be fine.” Due to Irving’s injury, the Mavericks signed D’Angelo Russell in free agency and re-signed Dante Exum. They’ll handle the point guard responsibilities while Dallas awaits Kyrie’s return, with Russell being worth the risk in standard league drafts.

The first overall pick in this week’s draft, Flagg will make his summer debut on July 10 when the Mavericks play the Lakers in Las Vegas. And his new head coach already has plans for how the prized rookie will be used. “I want to put him at point guard. … I’m excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens,” Kidd said, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. This will be something worth tracking, as the Mavericks will miss a significant portion of the 2025-26 season as he recovers from a torn ACL. While Dallas is expected to address the point guard position in free agency, there may also be times when Flagg initiates offense if he shows himself capable of doing so.
  • DAL Point Guard #11
Irving is now tied to Dallas through the 2027-28 season. He also has security as he rehabs from the left ACL tear that he suffered in March. The Mavericks have a talented roster that will center around Irving, Anthony Davis and the expect No. 1 overall pick in Cooper Flagg, which will help them be one of the best teams in the West over the next few seasons. Reports from April indicated that Irving could return by January, which would give this core plenty of time to mesh ahead of the postseason.
  • DAL Point Guard #11
Irving tore the ACL in his left knee on March 3, ending his season. He has a player option worth $44 million next season, but Charania reported that the Mavericks would like to tear up that deal to give the point guard a three-year extension this summer. That approach would align Irving with Anthony Davis and GM Nico Harrison regarding the remaining years on their respective contracts. With Spencer Dinwiddie being a free agent this summer, whoever else is in the Mavericks’ point guard rotation may have higher value to begin the season due to Irving’s injury.

Irving tore the ACL in his left knee during a March 3 game against the Kings, ending his 2024-25 season. According to the team, the procedure to repair the torn ligament took place on Wednesday and was successful. A timeline for a return to basketball remains unknown, and complicating Irving’s situation is that he can be a free agent this summer. Fantasy managers should operate under the assumption that he will not be ready when the 2025-26 season begins in October.

Jeremiah Fears puts up 16 Points (6-of-11 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), three rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two 3-pointers in 20 minutes against the Mavericks.

Jeremiah Fears looks to grow upon what he did in his rookie season with the Pelicans. Notably, he had five assists to two turnovers which is an encouraging sign. If he hadn’t reclassified when he was in high school, he would be a rookie this season. Fears could’ve easily been in the same tier as the top guards from this past draft. He should be a consistent producer sooner rather than later.

Victor Wembanyama accumulated 19 points (9-of-14 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), four rebounds, three assists, two steals and four blocks in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Suns.

Wemby may have missed all three of his three-point attempts, but the final stat line was what fantasy managers have come to expect. While a few managers may take Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with pick 1.1, many consider it a two-horse race. If it isn’t Wembanyama going first overall, then it will be Denver’s Nikola Jokić.

Stephon Castle amassed 18 points (2-of-5 FGs, 14-of-15 FTs), four rebounds and three assists in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Suns.

With the Suns sitting their projected starters, they struggled to find an answer for Castle on defense. He attempted only five field-goal shots, but the third-year guard’s ability to apply pressure off the dribble earned him 15 free-throw attempts. Turnovers and field-goal percentage limited Castle’s value in nine-cat formats last season, making him a superior option for those competing in eight-cat formats or points leagues.

Dylan Harper finished Wednesday’s exhibition against the Suns with nine points (4-of-11 FGs), six rebounds, one assist and one three-pointer.

With Julian Champagnie getting the night off, Harper remained in the starting five despite De’Aaron Fox making his first appearance of the preseason. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, Harper has a high fantasy ceiling heading into his second NBA season. The top-100 ADP is reasonable, as Harper will play plenty for the reigning Western Conference champions. With the Spurs playing their final preseason game on Friday, we should get a more definitive answer on Mitch Johnson’s starting lineup then.

De’Aaron Fox recorded nine points (3-of-5 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), three rebounds, four assists and two three-pointers in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Suns.

Wednesday’s exhibition was the first of the preseason for Fox, who logged 19 minutes against the Suns. While he struggled during the NBA Finals, the Spurs’ point guard is locked into that role going into the 2026-27 season. Fox may not be a top-50 fantasy player, but he remains valuable to managers willing to punt free-throw percentage.

Egor Dёmin puts up 17 Points (5-of-12 FGs, 3-of-4 FTs), three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and four 3-pointers on Wednesday.

Egor Dёmin looks to capitalize on his summer league performances and has done so in preseason. He’s been able to get by players more effectively which has helped unlock more of the passing. While he won’t be a full-time point guard in the NBA, he should still be one of the favorites to have a breakout season in the NBA. While its important to not over index on single game +/-, he was a 0 which led all starters.

Giannis Antetokounmpo puts up 20 points (8-of-10 FGs, 4-of-9 FTs), 15 rebounds, 9 assists, one steal, three blocks, in a 144-128 win.

Giannis looks like he’s in regular season form after dominating the Nets on Wednesday. They had no answer when he drove into the paint. He capitalized on miscommunications on defense with his passing. He should be going in round 1 in redraft league drafts.

Davion Mitchell had 13 Points, (4-of-8 FGs, 4-of-4 FTs), two rebounds, four assists, two steals and a 3-pointer on Wednesday.

Davion showed how much of a pest he is defensively in this game with his full court pressure and defensive numbers. He did leave the game temporarily after hitting his head on Day’Ron Sharpe’s knee, but he returned to the game. He should be primed to at worst, be a steals and assists streamer for redraft leagues.

Tidjane Salaün recorded 16 points (5-of-9 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), one rebound, one assist and four three-pointers in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Celtics.

Over two NBA seasons, Salaün has failed to secure a consistent role in Charlotte. The absences of Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams, both recovering from hamstring injuries, have created more opportunities for Salaün, who played well in Boston. However, one performance does not make him a player worth selecting in redraft leagues.

Royce O’Neale finished Wednesday’s exhibition against the Celtics with 12 points (4-of-4 FGs), two rebounds, two assists and four three-pointers.

The Hornets have been without Kon Knueppel all preseason as he recovers from a hamstring injury, and he’s unlikely to be ready for the October 21 season opener. While Liam McNeeley (seven points, five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one three-pointer vs. Boston) was the replacement in the first three exhibitions, O’Neale did the honors on Wednesday. The veteran wing is most valuable to managers needing three-pointers and steals, and he provided the former in Beantown. O’Neale’s negative was his team-high five turnovers. Charlotte visits Memphis in its preseason finale on Friday; that game should answer who is best positioned to start for Knueppel when the regular season begins.
