According to Locked on Kings’ James Ham, the Kings are not interested in exercising the waive-and-stretch provision on Zach LaVine.

In an unsurprising move, LaVine exercised his player option for the 2026-27 season, as he is set to make just over $49 million. Given the youth of Sacramento’s roster, the veteran guard’s role for next season is unknown. What is reportedly known is that the front office is not willing to put its long-term financial future at risk by waiving LaVine and stretching his contract. The contract makes LaVine a challenging player to move, which would not have been the case had he not picked up the player option. When at his best, LaVine can offer middle-round value in standard fantasy leagues. However, due to the Kings’ current position as a rebuilding team and LaVine coming off a season in which he played 39 games, his draft value may be knocked down a few rounds.

LaVine opting into the final season of his contract is unsurprising, as he will make a base salary of $49 million, a figure he was unlikely to match in free agency. The question now is where he fits within the Kings’ rebuild. Between the selections of Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in last summer’s draft, and Darius Acuff Jr., Alex Karaban and Emanuel Sharpe last week, the franchise is clearly looking to build around its younger players. LaVine getting his usual offensive volume likely would not mesh with that, but his contract may be challenging to move if the Kings wanted to go that route.

Due to a right fifth finger injury, LaVine missed Sacramento’s final three games before the All-Star break. Apparently, the injury is more serious than the Kings may have let on, as the guard will reportedly undergo season-ending surgery after the break. LaVine, who appeared in 39 games and averaged 19.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.7 steals and 2.5 three-pointers, has a player option for next season worth nearly $49 million. As for how his absence affects the Kings in the short term, rookie Nique Clifford has moved into the starting lineup and should remain there for the rest of the season.

Wednesday’s game will be the third that LaVine has missed with a right fifth finger injury. His absence has led to Nique Clifford moving into the starting lineup, while Devin Carter has picked up additional minutes off the bench. Expect the same against the Jazz.

While Clifford, who scored a career-high 30 points, is the superior fantasy option, Plowden is worth considering in deep leagues.

After totaling 34 points in his first two games back from injury, LaVine surpassed that number on Sunday. Given the matchup, with the Wizards having the youngest team in the NBA and also headed for the draft lottery, it’s unsurprising that he had a big night. However, with the trade deadline on the horizon, it’s worth questioning what LaVine’s future will be. The size of his contract may make it difficult for the Kings to find a trade partner, and if he doesn’t get moved, how much will he play after the deadline? Sacramento plays three games in Week 16, two of which are after Thursday’s trade deadline.

LaVine came off the bench in his return from a two-game absence on Thursday, and he returned to the starting lineup 24 hours later. He scored 17 points in both games, though he was more efficient in this one, even if the result on the scoreboard was the same. LaVine’s name will be floated around in trade rumors as the deadline approaches, but until then, he’ll remain a decent scoring option, even if he hasn’t been able to score as much as he typically does in recent weeks.

Dennis Schroder, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Precious Achiuwa and Maxime Raynaud will start against the Celtics on Friday.

LaVine returns to the starting unit after coming off the bench on Thursday, which will push Nique Clifford back to the bench. Domantas Sabonis is out on the second night of this back-to-back, which results in Raynaud making his return to the opening unit. This is likely just a one-game nod for Raynaud, but he should have some upside in an increased role.

LaVine returned from a two-game absence with back soreness, but he came off the bench in his first game back. He came off the bench three times during his tenure with the Bulls, but he has been a full-time starter since the 2015-16 season, which was his second in the league. He still played 29 minutes, while Nique Clifford, who started again, played 27 minutes. Assuming LaVine is available for the second leg of this back-to-back in Boston, he should return to the starting lineup.

As a result, Clifford still has some fantasy value in the short term, and his ceiling should be raised after the All-Star break.

HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reports that the Nets signed Grant Nelson to a two-way contract.

Nelson performed well enough for the Nets’ G League affiliate to earn a 10-day contract in late February. In four appearances for Brooklyn, Nelson averaged 4.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 8.8 minutes. While the two-way deal gives him a more concrete opportunity than the one he received last season, Nelson is unlikely to impact fantasy basketball in 2026-27.

Giddey, who missed 28 games last season with the majority of his absences due to a strained left hamstring, underwent right ankle surgery in May. Given a three-month re-evaluation timeline, the Bulls’ starting point guard recently resumed playing 5-on-5 and has not been restricted in any way. With Giddey now a full go, fantasy managers can approach their drafts with the mindset that he’ll be able to hit the ground running. With the additions of Caleb Wilson and Nic Claxton to the Bulls’ roster, Giddey is a legitimate threat to push his assist average into double figures next season (he averaged 9.1 helpers per game in 2025-26).

ESPN’s Marc Spears reports that the Kings and Ben Simmons have agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal.

The first overall pick in the 2016 draft, Simmons is back in the NBA after sitting out the entire 2025-26 season. In his most recent action, the 6-foot-10 point forward appeared in 51 games during the 2024-25 season for the Nets and Clippers. In those appearances, Simmons averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 22.0 minutes per game. While he’s had his moments as an effective fantasy option in the past, despite his limited scoring ability, fantasy managers should not expect too much from Simmons in Sacramento. However, keep an eye on him during the preseason to see if Simmons can earn a consistent role.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the Rockets and Amen Thompson have agreed to a five-year, $208 million extension.

The fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft, Thompson has emerged as a key figure within the Rockets’ current build. His scoring output has increased in each of his three seasons, with the 6-foot-7 wing averaging 18.3 points per game in 2025-26. Thompson, who finished eighth in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting, also accounted for 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.6 blocks per game while shooting 53.4 percent from the field. Despite the lack of three-point production, Thompson does enough in other areas to provide top-50 fantasy value. With Thursday’s contract extension and Kevin Durant set to turn 38 in late September, Thompson’s role should only grow in the years to come.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports the NBA will strip the Clippers of five first-round picks, fine owner Steve Ballmer $30 million and issue suspensions for Ballmer, Lawrence Frank and Gillian Rucker as a result of the Kawhi Leonard cap circumvention investigation.

Leonard will reportedly also have to pay $700,000 in restitution for improper benefits by the Clippers for his uncle and former business representative Dennis Robertson, who has also been banned from all business dealings in the NBA. Both Ballmer and Rucker have been suspended for a year, while Frank’s suspension is for six months. The picks the Clippers will lose are from 2029-2033, though they have a few extra picks during that stretch from the Kawhi and Ivica Zubac trades. The Leonard trade should officially go through now that the investigation is complete.
