Darryn Peterson went 1-of-5 and finished with three points in Sunday’s preseason win over the Nuggets.

Peterson also missed both of his three-point attempts. Though it was a poor effort offensively, Peterson was solid on the defensive end with six boards and a steal, and he chipped in two dimes to round out his final stat line. Better days are ahead for the No. 2 pick, and fantasy managers don’t need to read much into this performance.

Jay Croucher shares his approach to betting the San Antonio Spurs on the heels of an NBA Finals run, highlighting the motivation and team depth that makes them a "low to mid-60s juggernaut."

Peterson was a star during summer league in Salt Lake City, and that commanded the attention of Washington’s defense for the entire game. From the beginning, the Wizards applied full-court pressure when Peterson brought the ball up and made his life incredibly difficult. Though he still had some star flashes, this was by far his worst performance of the summer. He was reckless with the ball at times and committed nine fouls. He’ll look to bounce back against the Clippers on Sunday.
  • After dishing out two assists in his summer debut on Saturday, Peterson was elite as a playmaker on Monday. Two turnovers offset his 12 assists, and the second overall pick in last month’s draft also shot over 50 percent from the field. Even with the Jazz having Keyonte George and Isaiah Collier on the roster, there will be times when they need Peterson to do more playmaking for others. His improved ability to balance searching for his shot with getting others involved was highly encouraging and a reminder of the fantasy value he may provide as a rookie.
  • Peterson made his Jazz debut in front of the home crowd in the team’s first game of the Salt Lake City Summer League. Typically, summer league doesn’t correlate directly with success as a rookie, but if this debut from Peterson is an indicator, he’s going to be a star. The scoring was always going to be a strength, but he also showcased a lot as a passer and as a defender, even if the stats didn’t line up. Peterson has a strong case to start in year one on a team that will be pushing for the playoffs, which should allow him to be one of the better rookies in fantasy basketball.
  • Due to health issues throughout the season, Peterson had some questions to answer during the pre-draft prospects. However, whatever concerns there may be, the former Kansas guard is still viewed as one of the best players in this class, regardless of position. In 24 appearances, Peterson averaged 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.4 steals and 2.6 three-pointers, shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 82.6 percent from the field. Where he needs to improve is setting up others, as Peterson finished the year with 38 assists and 38 turnovers. Even with Keyonte George coming off the best season of his NBA career and Isaiah Collier providing depth off the bench, Peterson’s scoring ability will get him plenty of opportunities to contribute immediately in Utah.
  • WAS Guard #3
Acquired from the Hawks in early January, Young appeared in five games for the Wizards before being shut down in mid-March. Had he opted into the final season of his contract, the point guard would have earned nearly $49 million. And this may not be a case in which Young is opting out to negotiate a deal with the Wizards that would give the team more cap space. According to the report, there’s a belief that “multiple teams” will show interest in signing Young. Washington is perceived to be the favorite to sign Young, but that isn’t guaranteed. The question is whether this will affect how the Wizards view the first overall pick in next week’s draft. BYU’s AJ Dybantsa is considered the favorite to go first, but Kansas’ Darryn Peterson has refused to work out for any team other than the Wizards.
  • ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Darryn Peterson has only met with the Wizards ahead of the June 23 NBA Draft.
While Peterson is one of the top prospects in this draft class, most have assumed that BYU’s AJ Dybantsa will be the first overall pick in next week’s draft. However, the former Kansas guard is reportedly operating as if he only has eyes for Washington, refusing to meet with the other teams at the top of the draft lottery. Utah, which picks second, dealt with a similar situation last summer, but it did not keep them from selecting Ace Bailey fifth overall. Whether Washington’s acquisition of Trae Young will affect their thinking regarding Peterson is unknown, but the most recent reports make it clear that the 6-foot-5 guard wants to hear his name called first overall.

Michael Porter Jr. (wrist), Day’Ron Sharpe (shoulder), Mikel Brown Jr. (ankle) and Joshua Jefferson (back) will all be sidelined against the 76ers on Thursday.

MPJ and Sharpe both played in the preseason opener on Tuesday, so it’s unlikely these injuries are severe enough to impact their status for the start of the regular season. As for Brown and Jefferson, neither rookie played in the preseason opener, with their next chance to debut coming on Monday in Washington.

Kyrie Irving suffered a calf strain in December while recovering from a torn left ACL.

Irving was targeting a return last March, but the Mavericks’ lottery odds weren’t the only factor that prevented him from playing last season. Irving’s calf strain set him back eight weeks, which means he wouldn’t have been ready to return until well after their season ended. He will play in one of their two preseason games in China against the Rockets this weekend, though it hasn’t been decided which one.

Miles Kelly tallied 24 points (8-of-16 FGs, 2-of-4 FTs), seven rebounds, six assists, one block and six three-pointers in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Trail Blazers.

Kelly, who spent some of his rookie campaign with the Mavericks on a two-way deal, is with the Warriors on an Exhibit 10 contract. His chances of making the team’s Opening Night roster are slim, but a night like Wednesday doesn’t hurt. He shot 6-of-11 from beyond the arc and led all scorers with 24 points while also providing solid value in rebounds and assists. Don’t be surprised if the Warriors look to keep Kelly with their G League affiliate this season.

Dalen Terry finished Wednesday’s exhibition against the Trail Blazers with 23 points (9-of-18 FGs, 1-of-2 FTs), eight rebounds, nine assists, four steals, and four three-pointers.

With Wednesday’s game being their second in as many nights, the Warriors rested most of their available rotation players. Among those who benefited was Terry, who is in the Warriors’ training camp on an Exhibit 10 deal. Logging 43 minutes, the former first-round pick recorded a stat line that would make many fantasy managers ecstatic. However, while this was an excellent night for Terry, he still faces long odds to make the Warriors’ Opening Night roster.

Will Richard amassed 15 points (3-of-7 FGs, 6-of-6 FTs), three rebounds, one steal and three three-pointers in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Trail Blazers.

As a rookie, Richard averaged 20.0 minutes per appearance and shot 33.5 percent from beyond the arc. With Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody both out recovering from knee injuries, Richard will have opportunities to earn more playing time. He started against the Trail Blazers, as the Warriors rested many key contributors in the second game of a back-to-back. Despite his showing in Portland, Richard isn’t a must-draft player, especially in 12-team formats.

Brandon Williams tallied 17 points (7-of-11 FGs, 2-of-4 FTs), three rebounds, four assists, one steal and one three-pointer in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Trail Blazers.

With the Warriors playing their second game in as many nights, most of the players expected to log consistent rotation minutes were held out. That opened the door for Williams, who scored 17 points in 18 minutes. He earned consistent minutes in Dallas last season, and a performance like Wednesday’s can go a long way toward solidifying Williams’ immediate future with the Warriors. If he’s on the Opening Night roster, $1.4 million of Williams’ contract will be guaranteed. The rest would be guaranteed if he’s on the roster on January 10.

Robert Williams III notched eight points (4-of-5 FGs), five rebounds, one assist, one steal and five blocks in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Warriors.

With Donovan Clingan on the roster, Williams is locked into the backup center role. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t provide good value, especially for managers punting points or free-throw percentage. Against the Warriors, Williams was an excellent rim protector and already appears to have established good on-court chemistry with Ja Morant. With an ADP outside the first 100 picks, the Time Lord can be a fantasy surprise, especially if injury restrictions aren’t the issue they’ve been in past years.

Jrue Holiday finished Wednesday’s exhibition against the Warriors with five points (2-of-8 FGs), seven rebounds, five assists, one steal and one three-pointer.

Holiday came off the bench in Wednesday’s preseason opener, as expected. The good news for fantasy managers is that the veteran guard still provided positive value in rebounds and assists. Coming off the bench does lower Holiday’s fantasy ceiling considerably, pushing his ADP outside the first 100 picks in 12-team leagues. He’ll be worth a look for managers hoping to add a “safer” option in the latter rounds of drafts.

Donovan Clingan recorded three points (1-of-7 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Warriors.

Clingan didn’t shoot the ball well on Wednesday, but he was active as a rebounder and defender. And, truth be told, those are the areas where fantasy managers expect to receive value if they draft the former UConn center. Last season, Clingan provided third-round per-game value in nine-cat formats and was an excellent option for managers punting either points or free-throw percentage. That’s unlikely to change this season, especially with Portland adding Damian Lillard and Ja Morant to the rotation.

Ja Morant tallied eight points (3-of-8 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), two rebounds, five assists and two steals in Wednesday’s exhibition against the Warriors.

Making his unofficial Trail Blazers debut, Morant logged 19 minutes and recorded five assists. By comparison, the other four starters combined for six helpers. He didn’t score much, but that shouldn’t concern fantasy managers. The concern is Morant’s availability, as managers should assume at least one extended injury absence. After appearing in at least 61 games in three of his first four seasons, Morant has played 79 games over the last three. That concern knocks him down most draft boards, regardless of league format.
