It was just poor luck for the Giants that they never had the guys on base to employ their huge advantage over the rest of the league in situational hitting. Fried’s velocity crept back up some tonight; he averaged 95.4 mph with his fastball in the first two innings and 94.6 mph overall, up from 94.0 mph last time out. This is actually the first time ever that Fried has earned a win in his first outing of the season. Last year, the Yankees won 20-9 in his debut, but Fried gave up six runs — two earned — and was pulled one out shy of qualifying for the win. In 2024 with Atlanta, he didn’t even make it out of the first inning while facing the Phillies. Fried will pitch in Seattle next time out.

It’s the first time since July 10, 2024 against the Blue Jays that Webb has given up seven runs in a game. Five came in the second, when Webb gave up five hits and hit a batter. The remaining two, including the unearned run, came after three straight singles in the fifth. Webb struck out seven, so that wasn’t an issue. He just got beaten by a good offense, and while it didn’t have a huge effect tonight, it doesn’t help that he has a subpar defense behind him; Webb finished with a .346 BABIP last year and though the Giants have since upgraded in the outfield, that might not make as much difference to Webb as their downgrade at second base. Webb will face the Padres next time out.
  • NYY Right Fielder #99
He saw Logan Webb pitching and thought it was still the World Baseball Classic? Judge went without a four-strikeout game last year, though this is the 15th of his career. Three of those were five-strikeout games. Judge was the only member of the Yankees lineup to go hitless in the 7-0 win tonight.
  • BAL 2nd Baseman #7
Holliday is trending towards an early-season return to Baltimore’s lineup after suffering a hamate fracture in his right wrist earlier this spring. The 22-year-old former top prospect, who was officially placed on the 10-day injured list earlier on Wednesday, will get a couple rehab contests under his belt before making his season debut.

The procedural move theoretically adds some financial flexibility for the Padres since Darvish will not be paid his $15 million salary for 2026. The 39-year-old veteran strikeout artist, who holds a career 3.65 ERA across 297 starts over a 13-year career in the big leagues, has yet to announce his retirement and is currently recovering from an elbow injury. The restricted list is used for players that are unavailable for a variety of reasons, which seems to indicate that Darvish isn’t rehabbing with the Padres, who would retain his contractual rights in the event that he returns. At this point, it seems unlikely that Darvish will be a relevant fantasy contributor in the future.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #44
Pepiot landed on the injured list earlier this week with right hip inflammation after posting a microscopic 0.90 ERA across 10 innings this spring. The 28-year-old righty could be ready to jump back into Tampa Bay’s rotation at some point in early April, barring any setbacks.
  • NYY 1st Baseman #22
Rice steps into the heart of New York’s loaded lineup behind Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger following last year’s 26-homer breakthrough campaign. The 27-year-old slugger’s realistic 30-homer ceiling makes him an upper-echelon fantasy catcher heading into the regular season. Here’s the full lineup set to face Giants ace Logan Webb at Oracle Park in primetime: Trent Grisham (CF), Judge (RF), Bellinger (LF), Rice (1B), Giancarlo Stanton (DH), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (2B), José Caballero (SS), Ryan McMahon (3B) and Austin Wells (C).
  • SF Left Fielder #17
San Francisco kicks off a new era under first-year skipper Tony Vitello — the first collegiate coach to jump directly to the majors with no previous big-league experience — with Ramos becoming the first Giants player to make consecutive Opening Days starts in left field since Barry Bonds in 2007. The other notable fantasy development is free agent acquisition Luis Arraez in the leadoff spot. Here’s the full lineup set to face Yankees ace Max Fried in primetime on at Oracle Park: Arraez (2B), Matt Chapman (3B), Rafael Devers (DH), Willy Adames (SS), Jung Hoo Lee (RF), Ramos (LF), Casey Schmitt (1B), Patrick Bailey (C) and Harrison Bader (CF).

That’s unexpected. It’d been clear for a couple of weeks that Nootbaar would open up on the IL following his heel surgeries, but it was supposed to be the 10-day. Nootbaar has been hitting and throwing since the beginning of the spring and recently resumed running, but we take it that didn’t go as well as hoped. Nathan Church, Thomas Saggese and José Fermín will divvy up his at-bats for at least the first two months.
  • HOU Shortstop #3
The biggest concern for Peña, which could’ve led to a brief trip to the injured list to open the regular season, was the lack of live at-bats resulting from a fractured finger he suffered earlier this month. The 28-year-old shortstop homered in Tuesday’s exhibition contest and figures to be in Houston’s lineup for Thursday’s opener against the Angels. It might take him a few games to knock off the rust and get back to full speed.
