Joel Embiid amassed six points (1-of-5 FGs, 4-of-4 FTs), three rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in Thursday’s exhibition against the Nets.

While he was far from sharp on Thursday, Embiid played 24 minutes without incident against the Nets. More concerning than the 1-of-5 night from the field was his eight turnovers, but it’s just the preseason. Embiid won’t make a habit of that, especially with Tyrese Maxey and LeBron James on the floor. Most importantly, the former MVP needs to stay healthy, as the 76ers are without Adem Bona (foot) and lost Ariel Hukporti (Achilles) for the season on Monday. If Embiid can avoid the extended absences that have recurred throughout his career, he should exceed his ADP (50) by a safe margin.

The 76ers made a concerted effort to get Embiid going after a poor outing against the Nets last Thursday. The question is more about how he will fit in the offense during the regular season given his health issues, and we’ll find out more next Tuesday against the Knicks. This team’s future is heavily dependent on the health of Joel Embiid.

Bona, who is expected to compete with Ariel Hukporti for the backup center job, suffered the injury while representing Turkïye during FIBA World Cup qualifiers. The 76ers announced that he’ll be re-evaluated when training camp begins at the end of the month. While Bona’s injury won’t significantly affect his fantasy draft value, missing regular-season games would remove a potential safety net for managers who select Joel Embiid.
  • NBA Center #99
Fall last played in the NBA in 2022, but he’ll get another shot after playing professionally in China. Fall could make an impact as a backup big man if he sees the court, but he’ll compete with Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti for minutes behind the oft-injured Joel Embiid. Thomas and Nelson Jr. are unlikely to see many minutes this season, barring multiple injuries up the depth chart.

Embiid and the 76ers disappointingly saw their season end as the Knicks swept them in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. Since then, there’s been a change in leadership, with Gansey replacing Daryl Morey. In addition to acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Celtics, the 76ers signed LeBron James in free agency. Expectations going into next season will be sky-high, and it helps that Embiid can use this offseason to hone his craft instead of recovering from another injury. “This is like the first summer I think in a while that he’s been healthy, so he’s been in the gym working out,” Gansey told ESPN. “He’s been lifting weights. He’s extra motivated. He wants to play a lot of games, and he’s excited about the group we’ve built now. Even before these trades and LeBron, I think he was excited. So he’s motivated to have a good year and he’s ready to go.” When healthy, Embiid can be one of the most valuable players in fantasy basketball. However, the injury history will likely keep many managers from selecting him with a first-round pick in drafts.

Despite clearly being compromised physically, Embiid deserves credit for the effort he put forth in Sunday’s series finale. The 76ers’ center didn’t miss a shot from the field and led his team in scoring. Unfortunately for Embiid and the 76ers, the Knicks were able to attack him on the other end of the floor when they weren’t knocking down one of their 25 three-pointers. During the regular season, Embiid provided second-round per-game fantasy value, but he was limited to 38 games due to injuries. Availability concerns decreased his ADP by a few rounds in drafts last fall, and that’s likely to remain the case ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Embiid was initially listed as probable and with the 76ers down 3-0 in the series, it’s no surprise he’s available for Game 4 on Sunday. The 32-year-old center missed Game 2 with ankle and hip injuries, but had 18 points in 35 minutes in Friday’s Game 3 loss.

With the 76ers’ season on the line, it’s unsurprising that Embiid is on track to play on Sunday afternoon. After missing Game 3 with ankle and hip injuries, the 76ers’ center logged 35 minutes in Game 3. Embiid should take on a similar workload in Game 4.
  • PHI Center-Forward #21
Despite dealing with ankle and hip injuries that sidelined him for Game 2, Embiid logged 35 minutes in Game 3. While the stat line was decent, the 7-footer is clearly playing at less than full strength. The Knicks continue to target Embiid in pick-and-roll situations, and with consistent success. And the quick turnaround won’t help either, as Game 4 is scheduled to tip off a little after 3:30 PM Eastern. Embiid and the 76ers need a win to avoid elimination.
  • PHI Center-Forward #21
Right ankle and right hip injuries sidelined Embiid for Game 2, a defeat that dropped the 76ers into a 0-2 hole. He’ll take on his usual role as the starting center, but the rotation behind the former MVP is likely to be adjusted. Dominick Barlow, who played well in Game 2, may take on some backup center minutes because his defense is superior to Andre Drummond’s when switched onto a Knicks guard, most notably Jalen Brunson. Joining Embiid in the starting lineup are Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Paul George and Kelly Oubre Jr.

Ankle and hip injuries kept Embiid out of Wednesday’s Game 2 defeat. While Andre Drummond started, the 76ers were more effective with either Adem Bona or Dominick Barlow at the five, specifically to deal with the two-man game between New York’s Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. If Embiid remains out, expect to see more of Bona and Barlow.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the Thunder and Cason Wallace agreed to a five-year, $139 million extension.

Wallace and the Thunder had until Monday at 6 PM Eastern to agree to a rookie-scale extension, and they got it done on Sunday night. With the Thunder trading Luguentz Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins during the offseason, Wallace moves into a full-time starting role. He was close to a top-100 player in category leagues last season, and that may represent Wallace’s floor in 2026-27.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the Suns and Oso Ighodaro agreed to a three-year, $29 million extension.

The 40th overall pick in the 2024 draft, Ighodaro appeared in all 82 games for the Suns last season, starting 24. In those outings, he averaged 6.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.9 steals in 22.0 minutes per game. With Mark Williams sidelined due to injury, Ighodaro could begin the season as Phoenix’s starting center, with Khaman Maluach as his competition. Regardless of who wins the job, both will play rotation minutes. The contract gives Ighodaro added security, but that doesn’t change much regarding his fantasy outlook. He’s a late-round option at best.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Ben Simmons suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during Sunday’s practice.

Simmons’ 2026-27 season reportedly ended in devastating fashion days before his official return to the NBA. The 6-foot-10 guard/forward signed with the Kings with the expectation that he would back up rookie point guard Darius Acuff Jr. However, Simmons showed enough during the preseason to earn a starting spot alongside Acuff. Sunday’s injury changes that, obviously, with Precious Achiuwa and De’Andre Hunter being potential replacements in the starting five. As for the point guard rotation, Malik Monk will be asked to take on more playmaking responsibilities off the bench.

Dru Smith (calf) participated in Sunday’s practice but is uncertain for Wednesday’s game against the Timberwolves.

Smith suffered a strained right calf during training camp and did not play in any of Miami’s preseason games. Sunday’s practice was his first “live” session, so he may not be cleared to play in games for a little while longer. Smith’s availability does not affect most fantasy leagues, but it does leave Miami light on options behind starting point guard Davion Mitchell. Pelle Larsson, who missed the final two preseason games with an illness, may be asked to do some supplementary playmaking in Smith’s absence.

Bam Adebayo (groin) and Pelle Larsson (illness) participated in Sunday’s practice.

Neither Adebayo nor Larsson played in the Heat’s final two preseason games, but both are on track to play in Wednesday’s regular-season opener against the Timberwolves. Adebayo’s status matters more to the Heat and fantasy managers because of his role in the rotation. As for Larsson, he’ll provide added perimeter depth off the bench.

Spencer Jones (hamstring) said on Sunday that he expects to be available for Thursday’s opener against the Thunder.

Jones strained his left hamstring early in training camp and did not play in any of the Nuggets’ preseason games. He’s made positive strides in his recovery, most recently doing some scrimmaging during Sunday’s practice. Following the session, Jones said that he expects to be available for Sunday’s opener. If Jones plays, there may be fewer minutes available to rookie Trevon Brazile, who played well in the Nuggets’ final preseason games.

Dean Wade (ankle) and Dominick Barlow (back) did not participate in Sunday’s practice.

Wade rolled his left ankle in Friday’s preseason finale against the Celtics, while Barlow is dealing with back soreness. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said after Friday’s game that Wade’s ankle injury wasn’t a major concern, which could bode well for his availability Tuesday night. Neither Wade nor Barlow is in a position to be players who absolutely need to be rostered in fantasy leagues. However, Philadelphia’s injury-riddled frontcourt frees up minutes at the forward spots.

VJ Edgecombe (soreness) practiced on Sunday and is on track to play in Tuesday’s season opener against the Knicks.

Edgecombe woke up sore ahead of Friday’s preseason finale against the Celtics and did not play. His health has improved since then, and 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said the second-year guard is on track to be available for Tuesday’s season opener. Edgecombe will take his usual starting spot alongside fellow guard Tyrese Maxey.

Franz Wagner (shoulder) was limited to “light work” during Sunday’s practice.

Wagner exited Friday’s preseason finale against the Heat in the third quarter with right shoulder soreness. He was limited to light work in Sunday’s practice, and the Magic will continue to evaluate Wagner leading into Wednesday’s opener against the Hawks. If Franz can’t play, Tristan da Silva is the likely replacement in the starting lineup.

Anthony Black (ankle) participated in Sunday’s practice.

Injured just before training camp began, Black did not play in any of Orlando’s preseason games. He’s progressing in his recovery and practiced on Sunday, with Magic head coach Sean Sweeney saying Black “is moving well and will keep ramping up.” It’s unknown if Black will be available for Wednesday’s opener against the Hawks, but things are trending in the right direction.
