Celtics reporter Bobby Manning reports that the Celtics will start Derrick White, Jordan Walsh, Jayson Tatum, Paul George and Mitchell Robinson in Tuesday’s season opener against the Pistons.

White, George and Tatum were all locks for the starting lineup, but the remaining two spots were up for grabs. Walsh will slot into the final wing spot, and Robinson will replace Neemias Queta as the starting center. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla experimented with lineups throughout the 2025-26 campaign, and that may be the case in 2026-27.

Noah Rubin breaks down Damian Lillard's return to Portland, dropping 25 points against the Suns, and how the structure of the rotation may affect the fantasy value around the Trail Blazers.

Robinson got the starting nod in his debut for the Celtics, but, as expected, he didn’t dominate the minutes. Neemias Queta played 22 minutes off the bench, and Luka Garza logged eight minutes, leaving Robinson with the other 18. It’s absolutely worth noting that Robinson injured his ankle in this game and was seen icing it after, though Joe Mazzulla downplayed the severity. If Robinson ends up missing any time, Queta will likely slide back into the starting lineup.

Walsh got the starting nod at shooting guard for the opener, but that didn’t result in him playing starter-level minutes. He logged 13 minutes, which was fewer than Payton Pritchard (28 minutes), Sam Hauser (18) and Baylor Scheierman (18). Walsh may or may not continue getting the starting nod, but it’s clear he’s not currently worth rostering in most formats.

After coming off the bench in his first preseason appearances as a Celtic, Robinson started on Wednesday. The 7-footer had an excellent night, not missing a shot from the field or the foul line while also blocking three shots. Neemias Queta (16 points, one rebound and one assist) still played more, logging 24 minutes to Robinson’s 17. At times, the two shared the court in a big lineup, with Queta sliding up to power forward. As long as he’s available, Robinson should get the minutes needed to provide late-round value, especially for managers punting free-throw percentage.

The Celtics did not play Jayson Tatum or Paul George on Thursday, and their absences opened spots in the starting lineup for González and Jordan Walsh (16 points, two rebounds, one assist, one block, and two three-pointers in 26 minutes). As a rookie, González had his moments of fantasy relevance, and head coach Joe Mazzulla has shown a willingness to give young players opportunities to contribute. That said, fantasy managers in redraft leagues are better served adding González to their post-draft watchlists than using a pick on him.

After spending the first eight seasons of his NBA career with the Knicks, Robinson moved north and signed with the Celtics in free agency. One question for the 7-footer is how much he’ll be able to play after ankle issues limited his minutes in each of his final three seasons with the Knicks. Robinson, likely to serve as Neemias Queta’s backup, expressed confidence that he’ll be able to play more after averaging 19.6 minutes per game last season. “Oh, definitely. I feel very confident in myself,” Robinson said. “I’ve been working on my body this whole summer. Figuring things out. And I’m very confident in myself right now.” If he can get his playing time into the mid-20s, that would make Robinson a viable option for fantasy managers, especially those willing to punt free-throw percentage. However, Queta’s presence does limit Robinson’s fantasy ceiling.

With Jayson Tatum out for most of the season, Walsh took on an increased role for the shorthanded Celtics. He’ll be rewarded with an extension that will keep him with the team through the 2029-30 season.

Drummond’s reported deal will be an important one for the Knicks as they look to fill the void at backup center. Drummond has played 14 seasons in the NBA, serving various roles. He’ll essentially replace Mitchell Robinson, who agreed to a deal with the Celtics, to help New York in its title defense. Drummond averaged 6.4 points and 8.4 rebounds last season with the 76ers.

Queta enjoyed a breakout season for Boston last year, averaging 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. That was enough for him to earn a contract that will keep him around until for the remainder of the decade. The Celtics added Mitchell Robinson this summer, so Queta will likely split the minutes down low with him, though Queta should be the incumbent starter. He was a top-75 player in nine-category scoring last season in just 25.3 minutes per game, which is certainly a realistic role for him to play while splitting minutes with Robinson.

Robinson’s deal includes a player option in the third season. The 28-year-old center is coming off winning a championship with the Knicks as the organization’s longest-tenured player. Now Robinson will call Boston home for at least the next two season. The Celtics desperately needed help in the frontcourt and the addition of Robinson helps address that need. It’s no surprise the Knicks didn’t elect to sign Robinson given the team’s cap situation the organization’s desire to avoid the second apron. Robinson will go into the Celtic’s mid-level exception and Boston will be hard capped to the first apron.
  • NYK Center-Forward #23
Fresh off the franchise’s first NBA title in 53 years, the Knicks’ focus has turned to the roster makeup for 2026-27. While Dolan made it clear that he’s fine with writing a check to account for entering the luxury tax, that isn’t the case for the second apron. “If we could bring back the whole team, exactly as it is, why wouldn’t you? But I don’t know if we’re going to be able to, contractually,” Dolan said. “We’re willing to stretch, right. There’s certain things in the NBA that you’d have to be suicidal to do. One of them is called the second apron. Cannot go into the second apron. That’s up to Leon (Rose)...I’ll write as big of a check as possible, but I can’t write a check that goes into the second apron.” This is important because two rotation players, Mitchell Robinson and Landry Shamet, are among the Knicks who will be unrestricted free agents at the end of the month. And Jose Alvarado, who was critical in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, has a $4.5 million player option. The Knicks barely avoided the second apron this season; this task becomes even more challenging this summer.

Joel Embiid said after Thursday’s win over the Cavaliers that he will miss one of the 76ers’ final two games of the week.

The 76ers were the only team with a four-game Week 1, which will conclude with a Saturday-Sunday back-to-back. Embiid sitting out one game of a back-to-back, especially this early in the season, is not a surprise. The only issue is that he didn’t reveal which game he’ll miss, with the 76ers hosting Milwaukee on Saturday and Detroit on Sunday. Given the strength of those teams, the Bucks may be the team that misses out on having to deal with “The Process.” Adem Bona or Jabari Walker could get a spot start, and LeBron James may spend a little more time at center as a small-ball alternative.

DeMar DeRozan produced 13 points (5-of-9 FGs, 3-of-6 FTs) and two rebounds in Thursday’s loss to the Thunder.

DeRozan was used in a reserve role on Thursday, and that’s likely how he’ll be used on nights when the Nuggets are healthy. More importantly, he got 28 minutes in his Nuggets debut. DeRozan’s issues on Thursday: foul shooting and turnovers. In addition to missing three of six from the charity stripe, DeRozan recorded five turnovers. He’s averaged more than 2.5 turnovers per game once in his NBA career, so fantasy managers shouldn’t worry about Thursday’s number.

Aaron Gordon tallied 20 points (6-of-9 FGs, 5-of-6 FTs), six rebounds, one assist, two steals, one block and three three-pointers in Thursday’s loss to the Thunder.

A notoriously poor perimeter shooter for most of his NBA career, Gordon has worked hard in recent years to change that. A 41 percent three-point shooter over his last two seasons, the Nuggets forward hit 3-of-4 from distance on Thursday. By comparison, the other starters shot a combined 3-of-15 from beyond the arc against the Thunder. No one should expect Gordon to challenge Stephen Curry, but his perimeter shot is no longer a liability.

Cameron Johnson (ankle) finished Thursday’s loss to the Thunder with five points (2-of-3 FGs), two rebounds, one assist and one three-pointer.

Johnson played 11 minutes in Thursday’s opener before a right ankle injury ended his night just before halftime. Officially, the veteran wing was questionable for the second half, but he never returned. Alpha Diallo (4/2/3/1) started the second half and played 22 minutes. If Nuggets head coach David Adelman prefers to keep DeMar DeRozan in the sixth man role, Diallo could start Saturday’s game against the Pelicans if Johnson can’t play.

Christian Braun amassed seven points (3-of-10 FGs), six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one three-pointer in Thursday’s loss to the Thunder.

While injuries played a role last season, Braun’s scoring average dropped by more than three points compared to his 2024-25 output. Unfortunately, the Nuggets guard got off to a slow start on Thursday, shooting 3-of-10 from the field. Braun was active on the glass, but the overall production was disappointing.

Jamal Murray recorded six points (2-of-11 FGs, 2-of-4 Fts), 10 rebounds, three assists and one steal in Thursday’s loss to the Thunder.

Murray shot 2-of-9 from the field in the first half of Thursday’s season opener. Unfortunately for fantasy managers who likely believed that things couldn’t get worse in the second half, they did. Murray scored just one point after halftime and recorded more turnovers (four) than field-goal attempts (two). With the Nuggets playing just two games during Week 1, fantasy managers will hope to see Murray rebound on Saturday against the Pelicans.

Nikola Jokić accounted for 13 points (5-of-19 FGs, 2-of-4 FTs), seven rebounds, five assists, one steal, one block and one three-pointer in Thursday’s loss to the Thunder.

Neither MVP winner in Thursday’s game played well in the first half. The difference was that while Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander turned things around in the second half, Jokić could not. The Thunder big men deserve credit for their defense, but “The Joker” couldn’t find a rhythm. He and the Nuggets will look to bounce back when they host the Pelicans on Saturday.

Ajay Mitchell amassed 12 points (5-of-11 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), five steals and one blocked shot in Thursday’s win over the Nuggets.

While he may not be in the Thunder’s starting lineup, Mitchell can still provide solid fantasy value. He played 24 minutes against the Nuggets, doubling his point total from Tuesday’s win over the Spurs. More important for fantasy managers were the “stocks": Mitchell tallied six steals and blocks after recording none in San Antonio. Five-steal nights are unlikely to be the norm, but Mitchell can be close to a top-100 fantasy player for a second consecutive season.

Chet Holmgren recorded 12 points (5-of-9 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), 17 rebounds, two assists, one steal and four blocks in Thursday’s win over the Nuggets.

After blocking four shots in Tuesday’s season opener, Holmgren matched that mark on Thursday night. Add in the rebounds, and this was an excellent night for those rostering the slender 7-footer, especially in category leagues. The Western Conference Finals may have left a bad taste in Holmgren’s mouth, but he appears to have put that behind him. This could be a big season for Holmgren if he stays healthy.

Jalen Williams accounted for 21 points (7-of-15 FGs, 5-of-6 FTs), five rebounds, three assists and two three-pointers in Thursday’s win over the Nuggets.

J-Dub was Oklahoma City’s top scorer in their home opener, leading the team with 21 points while shooting just under 50 percent from the field. Williams, who appeared in just 33 games last season, looked much sharper than he did in Tuesday’s season-opening win over the Spurs. If he stays healthy, J-Dub should deliver a top-50 season to fantasy managers at a minimum.
