Sánchez was masterful on Saturday, tossing the third complete-game shutout in baseball this season. He scattered six hits and no walks, tossing an efficient 74 of 108 pitches for strikes and generating 17 whiffs to strike out a career-high 13 batters. The 29-year-old left-hander has posted a 1.82 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and an 80/14 K/BB ratio across 64 1/3 innings. He’ll follow up the dominant start with a matchup against the Guardians in Philadelphia on Friday.
  • NYM Left Fielder #22
Soto is not only receiving treatment on the foot, but he continues to deal with discomfort on his wrist, and he also has been dealing with elbow discomfort. “As long as he’s not putting anything at risk, he’ll continue to play,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters. Soto has been solid if unspectacular despite these injuries with a .271 average, .858 OPS and six homers over 124 plate appearances.
  • BOS Shortstop #10
The move is now official. It’s unclear whether Story will require surgery to address the groin issue that Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters has been bothering him pretty much all season. The lingering physical issue certainly helps explain his abysmal performance at the plate where he’s batted .206/.244/.303 triple-slash line with three homers and four steals through 41 games. It would make sense for the Red Sox to consider moving former top prospect Marcelo Mayer back to shortstop, but all indications are that Andruw Monasterio is going to be their short-term stopgap at the position with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Nick Sogard taking the occasional turn. There should be some additional clarity on Story’s return timeline relatively soon.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #77
Varland struck out pinch-hitter Colt Keith to extinguish a ninth-inning threat and send a tie ballgame to extra innings before coming back out to protect a one-run lead. The hard-throwing 28-year-old coaxed ground balls from Jake Rogers and Kevin McGonigle before striking out Dillon Dingler to end it. It doesn’t go down as a save, but fantasy managers will take the win, his second of the season. He’s been phenomenal this season, converting five saves to go along with a microscopic 0.38 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 34/9 K/BB ratio across 23 2/3 innings. He certainly looks like Toronto’s primary closer right now.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #12
Mize looked extremely impressive in his return to Detroit’s rotation, limiting Toronto’s formidable lineup to just a pair of hits while inducing some ugly looking swings. He generated 10 swinging strikes, with half of those coming on his slider, and needed an economical 71 pitches (51 strikes) to navigate six innings. Clearly, the Tigers didn’t want to push him from a workload and stamina perspective in his return from the injured list, which is why he didn’t work deeper into this contest. He’s compiled an impressive 2.43 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 39/11 K/BB ratio across 37 innings over seven starts this season. He’ll face the Guardians his next time out on Thursday.
  • MIN Center Fielder #25
Buxton is on the bench for the third consecutive contest due to lingering right hip flexor soreness. The 32-year-old center fielder has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball with 15 home runs over his last 26 games dating back to April 13. Twins manager Derek Shelton told reporters Buxton was feeling better prior to Friday’s series opener, but it sounds like he still needs some additional time off to rest and recover this weekend. It’ll be James Outman patrolling center field in his absence on Saturday night. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on his status as he remains day-to-day heading into Sunday’s series finale.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #54
The move is now official. The Yankees haven’t provided a definitive return timeline but fantasy managers should anticipate Fried missing at least a couple weeks. The encouraging news is that an MRI and CT scan didn’t reveal any structural damage in his elbow. The 32-year-old fantasy ace hits the shelf after exiting Wednesday’s start against the Orioles after just 61 pitches. He’s posted a strong 3.21 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 50/19 K/BB ratio across 61 2/3 innings this season. It’ll be rookie Elmer Rodríguez taking his spot in New York’s rotation until Gerrit Cole (elbow) is ready to make his season debut in late May or early June.
  • BOS Shortstop #10
No surprise here after Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy revealed that Story has been playing through a lingering groin issue pretty much all season. The 33-year-old shortstop has struggled to an abysmal .206/.244/.303 triple-slash line with three homers and four steals through 41 games. It’ll be Nick Sogard coming up from Triple-A Worcester to fill his roster spot. Putting former top prospect Marcelo Mayer at shortstop would make sense, but it was Andruw Monasterio at shortstop during Friday’s series opener in Atlanta.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #17
Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters Berríos will undergo a procedure to address the fracture in his elbow and potential loose bodies. He also added that there may be some ligament issues that need to be addressed, but that won’t become clear until surgeons begin operating. There should be a clearer return timeline following the procedure, but fantasy managers should prepare for the possibility that he’ll miss the rest of the season. It’s another significant hit to Toronto’s rotation depth that likely ensures that Spencer Miles will get a chance to work as a traditional starter moving forward.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #12
Mize returns to Detroit’s injury-ravaged rotation to take the ball against the Blue Jays during Saturday afternoon’s matinee affair following a two-week absence recovering from an adductor strain. The 29-year-old righty looked outstanding in his first couple starts prior to the injury, posting a sparkling 2.90 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 35/11 K/BB ratio across 31 innings of work.
