HLs: Angels walk off Rangers after Detmers dazzles

Jake Burger hit a homer to start the second inning, but aside from that, Detmers retired all 24 batters he faced. He’s the first pitcher this year to retire 21 in a row in a game, and his 14 strikeouts matched the MLB season high for a pitcher, which was established by Seattle’s Emerson Hancock against the Royals on May 2. Detmers’ previous high for strikeouts was 12, which he’d done four times. It’s the ninth time in his career that he’s pitched at least seven innings and allowed no more than one earned run. Four of those have come against the Rangers. Detmers, currently 1-5 with a 4.57 ERA, will face the Rays next.
  • NYY Right Fielder #99
Judge’s home run was his 17th of the season. He hit a two-run walk-off home run off Kevin Kelly in the bottom of the ninth inning. Judge had gone 11 games without hitting a home run prior to Sunday. Only Kyle Schwarber has more home runs than Judge so far this year.
  • LAA Center Fielder #27
Nathan Eovaldi left a cutter in the middle of the plate in the first inning, and Trout took advantage of it with a long homer to center field. That’s the 13th homer of the season for the future Hall of Famer, and he’s now driven in 27 runs over the first third of the season. Trout has now homered three times in May, and it’s just fun to see the 34-year-old healthy and productive on the baseball field more than anything.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #32
Kolek was outstanding against the Mariners on Saturday, tossing a complete-game shutout on his way to his third win. He scattered four hits and one walk, with just two runners reaching scoring position. Kolek collected only two strikeouts, but kept the Seattle lineup quiet by generating plenty of weak contact. The 29-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.77 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and a 14/5 K/BB ratio across 26 innings. His spot in the rotation aligns with a start against the Rangers in Texas on Friday, though Cole Ragans (elbow), currently on a rehab assignment, is due back soon.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Alvarez told reporters that he won’t be in the lineup for the tilt against Chicago, but he cautioned reporters that Sunday was a scheduled day off for the slugger. The 28-year-old exited with back discomfort during Saturday’s game against the Cubs, but it sounds like this was more of a precaution than a serious injury. It’s something fantasy managers do have to keep a close eye on from a player who has dealt with injuries over the past few campaigns.
  • CLE 2nd Baseman #87
It’s finally happening, weather permitting. Bazzana moves atop Cleveland’s lineup after hitting .273/.391/.364 with two homers, nine RBI and seven steals in 22 games since arriving in the majors last month. The 23-year-old former second-overall pick represents Cleveland’s best option as a top-of-the-order table-setter moving forward with Steven Kwan struggling at the outset of the year.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #63
The clubs ultimately decided there wasn’t enough of a window in the forecast at Camden Yards that it made sense to try to start this contest. It’ll be made up as a split doubleheader on Sunday instead. Fantasy managers should anticipate Saturday’s original starters — Framber Valdez and Brandon Young — taking the ball at some point during the twin bill.
  • CHC Center Fielder #4
Crow-Armstrong finds himself back atop Chicago’s lineup with manager Craig Counsell shaking things up. The 24-year-old power/speed combo fantasy threat had been scuffling at the dish this month prior to slugging a two-run homer and walking twice during Friday’s series opener at Wrigley Field. Nico Hoerner moves to the cleanup spot with Alex Bregman and Michael Bush hitting behind Crow-Armstrong. It’s a significant development that fantasy managers should monitor moving forward.
  • CHC Right Fielder #13
Alcántara is the type of high-variance power hitter who’s easy to dream on developing into an impactful fantasy contributor someday. He’s made a concerted effort to lift and pull the ball this season, resulting in an International League–leading 15 home runs in 41 games. That approach has also come with a hefty 33.3 percent strikeout rate. Alcántara’s contact profile is concerning, but his over-the-fence power is real. The 23-year-old top prospect, who has gotten into 13 games for Chicago over the last two years, is the type of streaky power hitter that is both exhilarating and frustrating to roster in fantasy leagues. He’s worthy of a speculative roster spot in deeper mixed leagues.
  • CIN 3rd Baseman #28
Suárez makes his return to Cincinnati’s lineup after being activated from the injured list prior to Friday’s rainout. The 34-year-old veteran slugger wound up missing nearly one month recovering from a low-grade left oblique strain. His presence will provide a lift for the rest of the Reds lineup as he’ll serve as much-needed protection behind middle-of-the-order threats like Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart.
