Mize returns to Detroit’s injury-ravaged rotation to take the ball against the Blue Jays during Saturday afternoon’s matinee affair following a two-week absence recovering from an adductor strain. The 29-year-old righty looked outstanding in his first couple starts prior to the injury, posting a sparkling 2.90 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 35/11 K/BB ratio across 31 innings of work.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters after the game that Holmes will be out “for a long time.” It’s another massive blow to New York’s rotation as Holmes had been exceptional so far this season with a 2.39 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 45/18 K/BB ratio across 52 2/3 innings across nine starts. He’ll hit the injured list this weekend and could wind up missing the rest of the year given the severity of the injury.

To say that Schwarber is on a tear is putting it mildly: He’s got a 1.133 slugging percentage over his last seven games and has hit nine homers in his last eight games to take the major league lead. His first homer sailed just above the second railing in right-center in PNC Park off a 98 mph Braxton Ashcraft fastball, and then hit a lined shot opposite field against Mason Montgomery that just kept carrying, landing 408 feet away in left-center. While it’s not explicitly said in the report, it’s likely that Westburg is undergoing Tommy John or an internal brace surgery as those were among the options presented earlier in May after he was shut down. Westburg will enter his age-28 season in 2027 looking to re-establish himself as a cornerstone for the Orioles.
